Persuasive Essay I have been told that the state of Iowa has extended the school day by an hour since the state had changed the number of mandatory subjects a student must take per year. Personally I disagree with the extension of the school day; I say this for many reasons some of those including little to no time for extracurricular activities, more homework, and just generally a longer day. Even though I might seem biased because personally I am a student, I will try to show both sides of the story. With the usual school day lasting about eight hours adding an extra hour to that would take time away from students participating in other skill building activities such as sports, band, student council, theater, National Honor Society, or robotics. Some of these clubs and …show more content…
Students in high school get anywhere from 1 hour a night to 4+ hours a night of homework adding even an extra 30 minutes for that one class can stop students from wanting to learn. After a long day at school and a meeting for a club you go home and immediately get started on all of that day’s work, and after a while you get the feeling of being “burnt out.” This can stop a child or teenager from wanting to learn in the end, may even make the student hate the subject itself, and if students are given too much homework it can make them have anxiety and horrible stress. Most high schools start anywhere from 7:45 – 8:30 am and go until around 3:00 – 4:45 pm, and that can mean 7-8 hours in school a day. It has been proven that teenager’s brains do not start working until later on in the day. Having such a long day at school can have many disadvantages such as straining your eyes at the end of the day trying to take notes, not having someone to pick you up on time, or even worse test scores. At the end of the day the students may be too tired to attempt to do their
High school students area bombarded with homework for the next school day. It usually takes a student around 2-3 hours to finish homework (Patel). That time does not include extracurricular school activities or other activities such as family time. When students try to fit all of these things in together, homework usually ends up being the one task that takes forever to do! Some students have to pull “all-nighters” in order to complete the assignment (Smith). The student comes to school the next day feeling very tired and that causes him to perform poorly in class. Currently, schools start at 8:10 and end at 3:40, that is including independent reading time, lunch, classes, and times to get to classes.
How would you feel if your school wanted to add an hour and a half to the school day? There would be lots of controversy over this topic. Many students will argue not to add the hour and a half to the school day. But, some teachers will want to add that time to have more time to study. The teachers would also like to study more on the SOL so that students would get better grades. The hour and a half should not be added to the school day because students will miss after school activities; students will have less sleep; students will get bad grades.
High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load.
The quality of students’ homework is much more important than the quantity of students homework and data collected during recent studies has proven that homework is not making the grade. “. . . American students are entangled in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math according to the most recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)” (Murphy-Paul). Students should not be given an excessive amount of homework because the pressure of having to complete excessive amounts of homework every night is quite daunting for most students. Knowing how much homework is the right amount correlates with age and grade. An 8th grade student should not be given a myriad of homework that would keep her awake past midnight completing assignments. In any case, there should be a limit on the amount of homework all teachers give to students because an excessive amount of homework would eventually cause students to become uninterested in school and learning, which could result in poor test scores and low ranks in international academic rankings. In order for students to carry out daily activities throughout the day restfully, teachers must be able to provide homework that does not exceed the appropriate amount of time needed to complete it, which is based on grade level. If teachers are too clueless of a students health due to excessive amounts of homework, many students will develop cases of sleep
Our school board are planning on adding an additional hour to school at the end of the day, i disagree. I disagree because the extra hour will interfere with our students after school jobs, the sport schedules and kids will get home late and will hardly have time to do homework and study. If the kids got home at 7 everyday during sport season, then they hardly have any time to do homework or study for a test. When the kids get home later and have less time to study, then their grades will drop and could possibly affect their future. The students will have to work more hours because they had to go to school longer for no reason.
First of all, After School activities will be affected. Many students and teachers will have to spend less time doing their activities because of the extra time they spend in school learning teaching. If they do not add or lessen the amount of time used after school, then students and teachers will not get home until around dinner time! Due to this new time schedule, some parents will not allow their kids to join these activities. Speaking of after school, many people who play sports will not get the practice time they need. Unless coaches add more practice days, which will tire students who have to play almost every day, they will not get enough practice for their sport. I personally would want more time to practice Marching band more in one day instead of a little every day.
Thank you for your dedication to providing an excellent education system for all students in District 203. Your hard work has made the district have very high rankings and be one of the best districts in the state. As a student at Naperville Central High School, I understand that all school days are important and that they all count towards our grades. In spite of that, many Muslim students have no choice but to miss school due to an Islamic holiday called Eid. Therefore, there should be a day off on the only religious holiday that is celebrated by Muslims.
Would others be okay with 1 ½ hours added to their school day? I highly doubt it. If so, here are a few reasons that i can hopefully convince whoever is reading this why it’s cruel. To begin with, due to the extended school hours, in some seasons, students won’t get home until dark. Also, for that very reason, some students may transfer or perhaps drop out due to this issue, causing the school to close. Finally, classes would become even more tedious and boring. After all, it’s not that great of a decision.
“ I’m tired, I can’t believe I have practice right after school, I want to spend time with my family” these are the voices of children now with the schools time imagine how or what they would be saying if an extra hour and a half was added to school. So now heard that's what the school board is trying to do and I think that shouldn't be happening. I will refuse to ever let the school add more hours to the time because some people have tight schedules , already get very little sleep due to homework, and need more family time.
As Sally Regenhard once said, “This is savage and barbaric. The torture seems to be never-ending.” School is degrading and stressful enough as it is, why would you add more time to everyday? We already attend school roughly, 35 hours a week. If the school board were to add on another hour and a half to each day we would be spending about 42 and a half hours every week at school. That is almost two whole days. Why should we spend that much time in an unaccepting hell hole, when we could be spending quality time with our loved ones.
Across the nation, students are either waking up even earlier in the morning, or staying later in the evening at their schools. Personally, I disbelieve such a tactic of education, like extended school hours(this comma is not needed), is effective or beneficial to a student’s education. To begin, lengthening academic time in schools, limits the possibilities of extra curricular activities, socialization, and time with one’s family. Also, with school hours being longer, comes the demand of increased expenses, including utilities, basic supplies, and staff. Finally, after a long day at school, children are often tired, anxious, and rambunctious. Adding an hour and a half daily, would provoke such issues into a much worse situations. As can be seen, extending school would cause issues such as, shortened time for after school activities, increased overall expenses, and overworked children.
One reason why the school day should be extended is that students can perform better in school. For example in the article ''Wake Up Calls(Fast Facts)'' It talks about how starting 30 minutes after 8 am was able to improve the students performance in there reading and math test. The article also talks about how starting school later than 8 am was able to boost students performance through out there classes. This evidence
Have you ever been so stressed out, and tired of everything? Well students all across America feel this way. With school years winding down teachers are putting too much stress among the students to do well on state test and school assignments. So as a solution to the problem many districts have had the idea of extending the school day. This is a bad idea because the districts are putting out unneeded money, and for what reason?
The school board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day. We are at school for seven hours already. Our school hours are from 8:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Most schools get out at 3:15 instead of 3:30. I agree with adding a hour and a half to our school days because I could get more work done, in classes we could go over more subjects, and my grades would improve since we could review more topics and take more time on everything.
Have you ever thought of how many more assignments you would be able to complete and how many different activities you would be able to participate in if your school day was shorter? Most students lack at getting the proper amount of sleep due to the fact that they are staying up late to meet assignment deadlines, driving to and from different places to participate in their after-school activities, and spending time with friends and family so that they are not completely rid of a social life outside of the average school day. The individuals have less energy to get up and go to school where they should strive to get good grades, but instead slowly begin to slack off a little more each day because of how long the school day is and how the feeling of being compelled to stay at their desks for seven hours only lowers their desire to want to complete their assignments. This act eventually leads to the students GPA’s diminishing and it being almost impossible to bring their grades back up in time. By shortening the school days, understudies wouldn't be as troubled about going to class and their evaluations would be higher. In high school, the average school day should not be extended because students academic achievements, after-school activities, and their social lives are already limited as it is. Lengthening the day would lead to more misuse of resources used during the school day as well as many other negative outcomes.
