Argumentative Essay: Should The School Be Extended?

School days should start later in the day because there are many benefits to doing so. Such as improved grades, Test scores, and safer roads because teens won’t be as drowsy if they sleep 8 plus hours.

There has always been a controversy as to if the school day should start later on in the morning or not. The University of Minnesota study shows that schools who have already changed the beginning of the school day to later have found that only a third of students actually received eight or more hours of sleep while the students who received less than eight hours reported to have more symptoms of depression, higher counts of caffeine, and substance abuse with alcohol and drugs. In “Should the School Day Start Later?” written by Michael Gonchar, Gonchar writes that, “New evidence suggests that a later start to the school day could have all sorts of benefits…” Some of those benefits could include the decrease of tardiness, increase in attendance, test scores and everyday grades, more positive mental health, and even car crash rates. All in all the research and studies over if the school day should start later has been in discussion for years.

Is College Worth The Cost? The thought and pursuit of college education has and will continue to be instilled in minorities. Though a debated topic, the attendance and completion of one’s college education statistically results in higher pay, a healthier, happier lifestyle and a sound future.

Many people ask is college worth the cost and wonder if paying thousands of dollars to go to school is actually useful. Some people say that it’s not worth the value and some say that it is. Statistically college is most definitely worth the price you are paying. College is an expensive and time-consuming choice, in which energy and effort must be exerted in. David Leonhardt argues that attending college and securing a college degree is worth the debt. However, Chris Matthews argues that even with a college degree, the crippling debt does not outweigh the pros of obtaining a degree. I believe attending college and obtaining a degree is worth the effort and debt for a rewarding job.

Extending the length of the school day will leave no time for kids to enjoy their lives outside of learning. I disagree with extra time being added to the school day. Students may become burned out and too tired to pay attention to their teacher. To begin with, adding time to the school day would limit the amount of time I could spend with my friends and family. Also, leaving the school day as it is will allow me to spend more time hunting and fishing. Finally, extending the school day will decrease or do away with after school activities. As can be seen, a kids life outside of school is greatly impacted by not being able to do the things that are enjoyable to them.

As a junior in high school, I am already worrying about my potential college education in the future. College is daunting, especially for someone in a lower middle-class family, like myself. We barely have enough money to pay bills sometimes. As much as I would like to go to college and further my education, I do not believe that college is worth the cost.

I believe we should always be optimistic when regarding the future of American education. Yet, as we continue to grow further apart as a nation, it will have a negative effect on education. We are not safe, and for many students there is no security, so when you are fighting to survive, education is pushed further away. We already know that the family, the home and the neighborhood affect a student's cognitive abilities, so what's next?

Across the nation, students are either waking up even earlier in the morning, or staying later in the evening at their schools. Personally, I disbelieve such a tactic of education, like extended school hours(this comma is not needed), is effective or beneficial to a student’s education. To begin, lengthening academic time in schools, limits the possibilities of extra curricular activities, socialization, and time with one’s family. Also, with school hours being longer, comes the demand of increased expenses, including utilities, basic supplies, and staff. Finally, after a long day at school, children are often tired, anxious, and rambunctious. Adding an hour and a half daily, would provoke such issues into a much worse situations. As can be seen, extending school would cause issues such as, shortened time for after school activities, increased overall expenses, and overworked children.
