Extending School Days

For example, a sixth grader has basketball practice everyday after school and it does not even end until five thirty. If the school board added the extension, school will end at four forty five. For that reason, the sixth grader may not be able to play basketball anymore. Not only with sports, but with clubs. Some clubs even help students with bringing grades up. Imagine how hard an extension may be on staff. Most of them have kids, their own homes, and tasks to complete in order to keep their family alive. Time in staffs’ lives is as important as the presidential election. To conclude, the more time spent in a classroom is less time to get very important tasks

Some people say that extending school hour's is a bad thing for multiple reason's.I strongly disagree because their are many benefit's to extending school hour's to start at a later time.For example, if state's moved schools hour's to a later time their would be increased performance and reduced absences.There would also be a reduced number of student's falling asleep in class's and much more.

Imagine sitting at a desk all day listening to a teacher drone on and hand you a worksheet right after that. Well if your school day was 9 hours and 30 minutes instead of 8 hours, then that's what you would have to do. You would be there till 4:30 in the afternoon. Who wants to be there for that with only lunch as a break? Every class would be about 18 minutes longer. Which is why I don’t agree with schools extending the day because it can cause sleep deprivation, result in more kids getting in trouble, and more kids zoning out.

The Massachusetts experiment proves that the extension can produce more money for schools. Even though some might think the extension brings in more money, the reality is extending the school schedule cost millions and not many states have the resources to fund it. In fact in the article “Schools Give Extended Class Time a Longer Look” Ledyard King states, “Lack of money was largely the reason Florida abandoned its experiment with a longer school day years ago” (King). King’s statement proves that extensions are sometimes too costly to go into action. Furthermore, many states are not financially inclined to provide their schools with the resources needed for the extension.

A regular school day is 8 hours, but if they extend school to 10 hours students will not be used to it and stop listening. When that happens they will not remember a lot of things, and their scores will go down. Also, they will have to not be able to do after school activities, and after school activities can help students to make more friends. If they can not make more friends, then their social development will not grow and children need that in their life if they want to have a successful

If the school board extended the school the day by one and a half hours, there would be many conflicts which schedules. Since students are at school more often, family interaction will decrease. Students will be busy completing assignments, and trying to prepare for the next day instead of spending time with their families. This will cause family relationships to grow weaker and weaker each day. An extended day would also affect sporting events between different school districts. While other school districts are released and hour and a half earlier, we would be released an hour and a half late. This would delay the start time of sporting events. The students who play sports would not arrive home until it was dark. The

The government should not extend school hours.it is not healthy for the kids.it can cause depression. It can also cause long term brain damage.it very unhealthy it will cause their center focus to be on school only not on their family or their friends. The consequences can be back problems because the more school they get the more subjects they the more homework they have. If you or if the government encourages or extends school hours the students will surely overload and they will surely have depression low self esteem and all these kind of stuff.

There is no direct correlation between longer school hours and better testing scores. According to source #4, “ The Chicago Tribune reported that there are no studies showing that longer school days help students do better in school.” Now, my question is, what is the point of making the school day longer if it doesn’t do anything? If extending the school day has no effect on the student's’ academics, then it is undoubtedly a waste of the student’s time and the government's money. This brings me to my third and final

Most students despise the thought of more school hours. I disagree with the majority, I think that there are great benefits to extending school hours. I have three reasons to support my opinion. Students could get more work done, preparing them better for a higher college education. Stay safer, and not face the dangers of the streets. Students could take more classes, which could give them more high school credits to possibly graduate quicker. I think these are crucial reasons to consider when the debate of extending school comes up.

Many educators have been thinking about making school hours longer.The school board plans to add one extra hour and a half to school. Many people have their different opinions on this idea. With school already being eight hours long the additional hour will make it nine and a half. There are plenty of reasons why this is not a good idea. I am strongly against adding additional hours to school because; some students gets grouchy, the teachers are tired, and schedules may be changed. That is a big change for a lot of people.

Will extending the school day really help? If they do raise the time for school, that extra time should go towards our lunch.

So now schools want to keep kids even longer than the already unnecessary length. Or at least unnecessary length of each individual class. The schools have gone too far this time, planning to add over an hour to the school day. Its already long enough as it is, but now they are going to drag it out even longer. Students are human beings, and like every person they can only handle so much in one day. But doing it everyday is even more far fetched.

Extending the school day by an hour would require students to take additional courses to fill the time. At SWHS, we go from 4 classes a day to potentially 5 or 6 classes a day. With more classes, students will now have to prepare for multiple exams per day. In the worst case scenario, students might have as many as 6 tests in one day! These many tests are bound to stress students to the point of exhaustion. For example, Jess Jones might have an AP History test for first period, a geometry test for third period, and a Business Essentials test during 6th period. However, an extended school year is an expensive challenge. Some costs would be: “administrative planning, staff development, storage space and even air conditioning”(Seattle PI). Since the school year is longer, the district would have to pay more to keep the schools running. The extended school year was suppose to aid poor communities, but the extra costs will be a burden
