Pietro Alessandro Gaspare Scarlatti was born May 2, 1660 in Palermo, Sicily and died October 22,1725 in Naples, Italy. Around the age of twelve, Scarlatti was sent to Rome to study music. While in Rome he studied with Bernardo Pasquini. Scarlatti wrote his first his first opera, Gli equivoci nel sembiante, in 1679. Queen Christina of Sweden made Scarlatti her Maestro di Cappella at the age of nineteen. He worked for the Queen until 1684. At this time Scarlatti was commissioned to write operas in Naples. As a result, he moved to Naples where he became the Maestro di Cappella of the royal service. Scarlatti worked in Naples until 1702. The composer of Turandot is Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini, who was born on December 28, 1858 in the small town of Lucca Italy. Puccini came from 5 generations of musicians and began writing operas at the age of 21. His realistic verismo style, which means truth or reality in Italian, allowed him to identify with his characters in a realistic way and his operas reflect real life situations. Puccini liked to write operas with heroines rather than heroes. His operas almost always include a death for the sake of love. Despite his operatic genius, Puccini only wrote ten operas in his lifetime. He died on November 22, 1924 at the age of 66. At the time of his death, he was only one act short of completing Turandot. His close friend and fellow composer, Arturo Toscanini, finished Turandot shortly after his death.
