“The Plastic Surgery of Food”
This year more than 559,000 Americans will die of cancer, and another 1,445,000 new cases will be detected. (Kushi, Jack 3) According to the American National Cancer Society, facts and figures from 2017 has linked that sixty years ago the rate of people who would get cancer in their lifetime was one of eight, however, today it has risen to one in two men and one in three women. Several studies indicate processed foods are a leading contributor to the rising cancer rates because of artificial ingredients, GMOs, and how human process these foods.
Processed foods can be classified as any food that has been altered from its natural state. “A nationwide analysis of U.S. grocery purchases reveals that highly processed foods make up more than 60% of the calories of the food we buy.” (Highly Processed Foods Dominate U.S. Grocery Purchases) Processed foods include processed meats which include luncheon meats, hot dogs, ham, bacon, & salami are linked to an increase of bowel, stomach, and pancreatic cancers. Colon cancer currently ranks 3rd; with prostate cancer being 4th, for the most popular diagnosed cancers. (Kushi, Jack, 253) However, it can also be argued that the “top contributors for cancer remain smoking, alcohol and obesity.” Robert Pickard, a member of the meat advisory panel and emeritus professor of neurobiology at Cardiff University. It’s hard to link however, if it’s attributed in the meats itself being preserved in a large
In this generation of American society, there is a great emphasis on living a healthy lifestyle from factors such as diet and exercise. Yet today many of the products that Americans use and consume are full of cancer causing agents. In a society where there is a vast amount of research conducted and strict regulations, many daily used products are like a time bomb ready to explode. One-third of all people will develop cancer in our lifetime and one-fourth will die from this disease. Many cancers are due to preventable revelations to industrialized carcinogens and toxins in the food people eat, and household products and cosmetics people use daily.
But no less than in our DNA, the sights, scents, and rituals of meat eating are in our cultural DNA" (The War of Delicious pg. 5). Meat in today's culture is no longer healthy for humans, we do not realize this because as it states in the quote, 'eating meat is in our cultural DNA'. Meat is no longer healthy for humans because it is all processed and has artificial materials in it. "On October 26, the WHO officially identified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning the quality of the evidence firmly links to cancer" (The War of Delicious pg.1). Cancer?! Who knew that what we, as humans, were eating could actually give us cancer and could kill us? Some of the reasons processed meats cause cancer are because of nitrates and nitrites, heme iron, and high temperatures. When handling meat we must be extremely cautious when it comes to high temperatures and meats it comes very dangerous because meat that is cooked at high heat can produce carcinogens. What is the cancer risk of eating processed meats? The cancer risk is if you eat 50 grams per day of processed meats. This
The article states that “Hopi Indians have had cancer rates of 1 to 1000 as opposed to 1 in 4 of the typical American”. The Native Americans eat grass fed meat, which contains nitrilosides that fight cancer. In America, there “is something in this modern way of raising livestock and poultry that is contributing to cancer.” Americans are eating processed meat, red meat and other foods that are causing them to get cancer. Native Americans are eating quality animal protein, which “often contributes to good health, as in getting critical Vitamin D from Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon.” Americans don’t consume good quality animal protein, which causes more Americans get
Thesis: Despite the numerous factors such as genetic mutations, smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals known as carcinogens, hormones, and lifestyle choices, today’s main culprit of many types of cancers is diet, specifically the American or Western diet which is characterized by a high intake of red meat, refined sugars, and saturated fat.
In populations where there was consumption of unprocessed red meat and processed meats, showed higher rates of developing cancer than those who have a high fiber, plant based diet like those of vegetarian or vegan diet. A study conducted in Germany showed that those with a plant based diet had a 40% reduced chance of developing cancer versus those who were regular meat eaters. Processed meat are products including: bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats.
Smoking added to excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of these cancers even more. A maximum of four drinks a day for men and two drinks for women is recommended. Surprisingly enough, frequent consumption of smoked cured and nitrate preserved meats has also been shown to cause cancer. The codes of 249, 250, 251, and 252 on labels of corned beef, bacon, and smoked sausage indicate that the meat has been cured or preserved. These products increase the risk of stomach cancer and should be eaten in moderation. (http://www.petermac.unimelb.edu.au/DIET.html)
“As humans, we should already be eating foods that are similar to a person that has been prescribed a cancer diet” (Lee).
The Epidemiology Research Program strives at decreasing the stress of cancer by overseeing large, nationwide studies that they anticipate will increase the knowledge base of cancer related to the causation and survival as well as having an impact on cancer prevention programs (ACS, 2017a). They have a team of experts that manage everything pertaining to cancer prevention studies (ACS, 2017a). From these studies, they have published over 750 scientific articles, which have been utilized nationally as well as internationally (ACS, 2017a). They have made significant contributions to tobacco-related research, obesity, diet, activity levels, use of hormones, pollution, and other cancer related exposures (ACS, 2017a). For more than 60 years, information obtained involving the research of nearly 2.7 million men and women of the United States that were willing to be enrolled in the
“One out of every four deaths in the U.S. is from cancer. About 1.2 million new cancer cases are diagnosed in the U.S. annually and about 564,000 Americans will die of it each year-- more than 1,500 people per day” (GrowthHouse). The real question is, what causes cancer? Is it all genetic or do things that we use in our everyday lives cause cancer? There are so many different ideas of what actually causes cancer. There has been a great deal of research in labs to see what increases the risk of someone getting diagnosed with cancer. Research has shown that the effects of chemicals in laundry detergent, sunscreen, hair dye and alcohol are possible causes of cancer.
According to the Office of National Statistics, in 2013, 29% of deaths in the UK were cancer related, making it the leading broad cause of death in the population. In the United States, 1 in 4 deaths are cancer related, and it is estimated that in a lifetime, there is 44% chance of contracting an invasive cancer if you are male, and a 38% chance if you are female (Siegel et al. 2014). So, although our knowledge and education into different cancer mutagens such as UV radiation, chemical carcinogens and viruses (Alberts et al. 2002), as well as cancer physiology and treatments may have improved, leading to a decrease in cancer related mortalities, there are still huge advances to be had in the field (CRUK 2013).
Ares is the god of battle and war from Thrace, son of Zeus and Hera, and brother to Hebe, Eileithyia, and half-sister Athena, he has a daughter named Harmonia and son named Eros. He is one of the twelve Olympians but wasn’t liked much by anyone; except for when it came to battle. Ares had an affair with his brother’s (Hephaestus) wife Aphrodite, this may have gone on for so long because Hephaestus was deformed and maybe couldn’t perform up to Aphrodite’s expectations, therefore she sought out Ares. However, they were caught by the sun-god Helius, who decided to tell Hephaestus. Instead of turning to anger and hurting Ares, Hephaestus decided to get
Hot dogs, bacon, chicken nuggets,... are not they sound good? But everything has its bad side, and do you know behind that crispy and yummy tastes is a silent threat of illness? Mr.Kelly Gallagher wrote an article entitled “Hot dog, bacon and other processed meats increase risk of cancer, scientists say.” And after reading it I feel very concerned. What the fourth paragraph had stated makes me even feel worse, “The experts defined processed meats as those that have been salted, cured, smoked or otherwise transformed to enhance their flavor or keep them from going bad. Although most processed meats are derived from beef and pork, they can also be made from other kinds of red meat, poultry or organ meats like liver or sweetbreads.” Processed
To get an idea about how the cancer rates in America correlate with eating patterns, I will give a little history of dietary habits. Traditionally, food was an integral part of life. Life revolved around food because life revolved around survival. (Cancer, 7) Before the Industrial Revolution, local resources had to be relied upon for sustenance. There were no major highways for transporting food and other goods. This meant that most homesteads were self-sustainable. Farming was done to provide food for the members of the family and the farm animals. Most meals were prepared on a daily basis from scratch because there were very few food storage options. (Cancer, 11)
Everyone loves to eat food… especially in America where obesity has been a problem for years. Sadly, this essay is not about obesity but about something that could possibly be more life threatening. The issue in this essay is over the larger risk of eating food that has GMO’s that are also known as genetically modified organisms which are in the food we happen to eat every day and give to our family and friends. Largely, the stances are highly polarized with opponents saying it is all cancer causing, poisonous, and environmentally dangerous (The Truth about). I believe that some of these additives may not be safe for us and it is having an effect on our bodies which can lead to dangerousenvironmental effects like cancer for example. Some believe thatthe problem with GMO’s are that they are not one hundred percent natural. Before I even knew about GMO’s I was always devouring all kinds of foods that seemed at the time a little unhealthy but overall good to eat. After finding out the truth behind my favorite brands I was somewhat disgusted by I heard what has been inserted into these foods over the years. But just like the author said the world is not black and white, and we cannot lump an entire branch of science together with those abusing it (The Truth about). As a teenager I look forward to having a long and fulfilling life but with the way people say scientist and companies poison the food we eat I feel that just eating something with GMO’s in it will have a negative
There were multiple political problems that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. There were a series of corrupt Emperors whose inexperience because of inherited rule led to bad decisions. As a result of clouded judgement because of greed and power, some Emperors were assassinated by their own Praetorian Guards on some occasions. The Praetorian Guards serve as a secret service for the rulers of Rome. The Guards would do this for money or power. Since there was no system of someone gaining power after the death of an Emperor, Legions fought amongst themselves to put their general on the throne. The citizen revolted because of the terrible conditions to live in, the Emperors not listening to the needs of the citizens and high
