“One out of every four deaths in the U.S. is from cancer. About 1.2 million new cancer cases are diagnosed in the U.S. annually and about 564,000 Americans will die of it each year-- more than 1,500 people per day” (GrowthHouse). The real question is, what causes cancer? Is it all genetic or do things that we use in our everyday lives cause cancer? There are so many different ideas of what actually causes cancer. There has been a great deal of research in labs to see what increases the risk of someone getting diagnosed with cancer. Research has shown that the effects of chemicals in laundry detergent, sunscreen, hair dye and alcohol are possible causes of cancer. They reduced the levels of 1,4 dioxane which is known as a carcinogen. “1,4 dioxane is a known cancer-causing chemical that has been linked in animal studies to increased risk of breast cancer” (Women’s Voice). This chemical was not found on the Tide product label or on the product website so consumers had no idea it was even there. The American Cancer Society also stated that hair dyes are a possible risk factor for various types of cancers. “Most studies of people exposed to hair dyes at work, such as hairdressers and barbers, have found a small but fairly consistent increased risk of bladder cancer” (American Cancer Society). Certain ingredients used in hair dyes have been shown to cause cancer in the lab animals. Most of the studies looking to see if hair dyes increase the risk of cancer are focusing on bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and leukemia. Studies have shown an increased risk of bladder cancer in people exposed to hair dyes such as, hairdressers and barbers. “Studies looking at a possible link between personal hair dye use and the risk of blood-related cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma have had mixed results” (American Cancer Society).
