There were multiple political problems that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. There were a series of corrupt Emperors whose inexperience because of inherited rule led to bad decisions. As a result of clouded judgement because of greed and power, some Emperors were assassinated by their own Praetorian Guards on some occasions. The Praetorian Guards serve as a secret service for the rulers of Rome. The Guards would do this for money or power. Since there was no system of someone gaining power after the death of an Emperor, Legions fought amongst themselves to put their general on the throne. The citizen revolted because of the terrible conditions to live in, the Emperors not listening to the needs of the citizens and high …show more content…
The migration of the farmers, who were plagued with famine, made Rome the first city to have 1,000,000 people in it. This made it easier for diseases to spread. At that time lead wasn’t known to poison water, but it was good for reinforcement in metal, so all the water systems had lead in them. In addition to the pipes, aqueducts and kitchen utensils had lead too. Since there was not enough food, and the water was contaminated that led to Malaria which killed most of the population. During the virus, the leader of the Hunnic Empire held (Attila the Hun) off his attack plans on Italy because of Malaria, smart guy! The last part of the fall of the Western Roman Empire was the invasions. When conquering land the Romans thought that they should use natural borders, like the Rhine and Danube rivers, to defend. When using these borders they did not think that enemies would cross the frozen rivers over to their side and attack. They also tried walls, but they did not have enough men to defend them. Eventually the Rome was burnt down by outside invaders (Chief Alaric). That was the attack the destroyed the Western Roman
Fall of the Western Roman Empire The fall of the Rome is a great event in history that is not lacking contributors. However, it is clear that Rome was not overthrown by outside enemies but crushed by internal decay(Doc 5), not Barbarian invasions as suggested in Doc 6. The Roman Empire was plagued with so many problems that is no wonder that it fell.
The Western Roman Empire fell due to many flaws. However, it fell mainly due to invasions from external enemies, economics, and a discouraged society. Therefore, the empire began to slowly decline. This expansive empire fell not due to one, but many faults made over a time period. To this day the empire is remembered as one of the most advanced of its time.
For hundreds of years, the Roman Empire influenced most of the world today by architecture, art, philosophy, engineering, and government. For about 1,000 years, the Empire of Rome was in control of the Mediterranean world. As the empire prospered it was starting to fall apart. Most of the problems occurred from within Rome itself as well as other outside invasions that also led to the fall of the Roman Empire. Most scholars ponder on what exactly led to the decline Rome. The primary reasons for the ¨Fall¨ of Rome were disasters (Doc F), foreign invasions (Doc C/D), and diseases (Doc F).
The Fall of the Western Roman Empire were caused by many different reasons. The Western Roman Empire is the Western part of the Roman Empire, being only part of what the Roman Empire was. There were many issues within the Western Roman Empire, for example, all of the Barbarian Invasions, their government issues, and the division of the empire. These all had major effects on the Empire and caused it to crumble.
What caused the fall of the Western Roman Empire? The collapse of Rome was caused entirely by itself. With Rome's government inability to sustain its empire, Rome's army eroding, and terrible financial maintenance Rome led itself to complete and utter destruction. Rome’s government failure to sustain its empire led it to finally collapse. Henry Haskell an author of The New Deal in Old Rome writes “Part of the money... workmen from their occupations.”
“...sacked by outside invaders… Italy and the west were shattered…” (Primary Reasons for the fall of Rome article). When the main point of an empire gets taken over, worry spreads. Worry makes people unsure and they start freaking out. This causes chaos and chaos lead to even more disaster. Rome was first invaded by the Visigoths (Doc C).
One important reason that caused the Roman empire's downfall, was it's massive size. According to document 2, Rome was too vast to take care of itself properly. Most of the problems were with money and the borders were hard to keep safe. These problems were hard to keep under control, so rome
The shores of the Mediterranean were left dry by the sudden retreat of the sea… but the tide soon returned with the weight of an immense flood which was severely felt along the coasts of Sicily… Greece, and of Egypt… Fifty thousand people lost their lives in the flood.” In addition to this life ending flood, the was a large outbreak of the measles. Document F states, “The population of Rome was decreased from a million people, to 250,000.” This made the recruitment of troops very hard so they were forced to pay Germanic soldiers to fight for them.
The fall of the Roman Empire was caused by many things, but one of the main things was corruption. Document E states, that many poor people, in Rome, were charged for crimes that the wealthy people escaped. No one wants to live in an unjust empire with a corrupted government. Document E also says the taxes were, “very severe.” People started to attack each other and very few people were OK with the Roman Government.
Although some people think that there were many other reasons causing this major crash like moral decline, military mistakes and political instability were the primary reasons for the “fall” of Rome. The military became lazy, which led to the falling point of Rome’s Empire. Political Instability led to miserable Roman citizens and messed up laws.
Due to the mass amounts of civil war taken place on Roman land, farming and agriculture greatly suffered. Land was over worked and overused causing the land to become infertile. Soon food shortages and diseases caused the population to decrease. From the cumulations of lost money to war and farming the economy weakened and inflation became high. The gap between the rich and poor gradually increased and the economy weakened. Between civil wars, high taxation, and food shortages, citizens lost a sense patriotism that once flourished throughout society.
As Rome was facing attacks from the outside there was an even deeper problem happening from within and it was their economy. Rome’s constant war and overspending in building its empire was becoming costly. As their treasury depleted they decided to impose hard taxation to account for the new expense they were generating. Which actually caused many people who were apart of the upper class to move to the countryside to avoid the oppressive taxes(Andrews) . Another economic problem is that inflation began to occur. Marcus Aurelius increased the copper content of the silver coins and then after that there was even more severe inflation on it way(Starr 144-145). A third problem with the economy, also politically, was that there was an ever growing expansion of bureaucracy. The expansion of their government caused more and more officials to have to be paid. Not to mentions cities already were having a hard
The Roman Empire was a glorious civilization that lasted for a long period of time, and was two million square miles in size. It is mostly known because of how big and strong it was, but the Roman Empire could have held that title for a longer period of time. There were several entities that can be held responsible for the fall of Rome, such as Emperor Diocletian, the government and ethnic groups that were new to the empire. Unfortunately the extremely famous, big and strong empire started to fall gradually between 190 A.D. 410 A.D. due to three causes. The causes for the fall of the Roman Empire were the empire’s sheer size, racial weakening, and splitting of the empire into two.
The Roman Empire was a vast territory that expanded to three different continents. They were a place of honor, tradition, and respect. Rome has had several different periods, some of peace, and some of violence or unrest, but those were solved quickly and effectively. However, such a magnificent empire could not hold up under the strains that were slowly causing it to collapse. Rome began to face many problems that together allowed the fall of the Roman Empire. The three main problems that caused Rome to fall were invasions by barbarians, an unstable government, and pure laziness and negligence.
The era dominated by Roman empire is one the most well-known and influential periods of history, home to famous names from Julius Caesar to Jesus Christ. At its height, Rome’s territory stretched from the Atlantic coastline to the Middle East, reigning over 60 million people, one-fifth of the population of the ancient world. However, the Roman empire’s treatment of their conquered people’s and their own citizens ultimately led to the permanent downfall of Rome.
