Every year on October 12th Americans across the country celebrate Columbus day. A day honoring the famous (or infamous) explorer Christopher Columbus , famous for supposedly discovering America (The Bahamas today). Until recently most people have celebrated the day without a second thought, but now there is more evidence that Christopher Columbus wasn’t just a peaceful explorer. When I was younger , I was taught that Christopher Columbus “sailed the ocean blue , in 1492”. I was taught to think of a hero ; The man who discovered America. Columbus day to me was just a day off , where I didn’t have to go to school. I feel that a fair amount of Americans today think of Columbus day the same way. I think very few people actually take the time
In my opinion, we should not celebrate Christopher Columbus Day. This is because Columbus has committed many harsh and cruel crimes against the aboriginal peoples of North America, he didn't actually prove the earth was round, and he wasn't even really the first (white) person to discover it. Firstly, Columbus was in fact a murdered who enslaved other human beings for the purpose of obtaining gold. He mistreated these people horribly often cutting their hands off if they didn't supply him with the gold he desired. He permitted the rape and murder of first nations women and they were often killed as sport. This is absolutely horrible and no man should be celebrated when he has committed
Should we or should we not celebrate Columbus Day? …I THINK NOT! He may have opened the path for exploration for the Europeans, but he certainly didn’t find the Americas!!! Columbus was a Spanish explorer, that was looking for the Indies and he didn’t know about the Americas in between the two, so when he came to the Americas he figured that it's was the Indies. Really, if you look at it as if it happened in this time he would be considered a terrorist, because when he came to the Americas,or what he thought was the Indies, he planned on teaching them Christianity, well how he did that was not very pleasant.
Columbus Day should be a day of remembrance for the Native American people, instead of a day of celebration for the historical beginning of America. The Europeans came to America and claimed that they discovered the land. But the truth was that there were Native American people living in America way before the Europeans arrived. The Europeans oppressed the Native Americans.
Columbus was an italian explorer who took four voyages across the atlantic ocean. Columbus day should be celebrated because he brought attention to america, its history as one of the oldest holidays. He brought attention to america because of its legacy, discovery of america, and having no change in growth in the population for thousands of years. It also had a great history because of the reason it started, why it was honored, and because of how many years it's been celebrated.
Columbus Day is a holiday that celebrates Christopher Columbus an Italian explorer who sailed over 500 years ago with three ships from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean in a daring attempt to expand our knowledge of the known world in hopes of discovering new lands (Obama). He is credited with discovering the New World in 1492. Though this sounds honorable and inspiring, it was basically a search to find new lands in order to claim and take control of them, plunder their wealth, enslave their occupants and murder any who tried to stop him (Zinn). Since the United States is built on the beliefs of freedom, equality, peace, and humanity, I don’t feel that we should continue to honor and celebrate
Lately, there have been some questions to whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. This question is highly debateable, but the accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. Columbus is one of the most recognized explorers ever, he was ambitious, intelligent, and dedicated. Columbus should have a day commemorating him, and that is self evident.
Columbus in the New world. America should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day because it brought destruction to Native Americans, provokes and discriminates Native Americans and Columbus never really discovered the Americas. It brought destruction to Native Americans by destroying them completely in the Caribbeans after two decades, punishing them in terrible ways and bringing slavery to them. It hurts Native Americans today through culture, racism and emotionally. And Columbus never really discovered the New Lands since America was not close to empty, he already had knowledge of “New Lands” and he was possibly wasn’t even the first non-american to reach the
First of all, I believe that we should keep Columbus day is because he helped establish America as a place for the Europeans to travel to. Even though he thought that he had partially circumnavigated the Earth around to India, his voyage was essential in opening the way for European explorers during the Age of Exploration. This eventually led to colonies being settled in America and eventually the founding of the independent country of the United States of America. The voyages also helped the economy of Europe.
The United States should not celebrate Columbus Day because it celebrates the mistreatment of Native Americans. One quote from the article that demonstrates this is, “a holiday called Indigenous Peoples Day will instead recognize the contributions, and suffering of Native Americans, people who lived in the Americas before Columbus arrived.” This quote demonstrates that Columbus may have improved some lives, but he destroyed others. Every year on Columbus Day, Native Americans are forced to celebrate the murder and theft of their people, lands, and homes. They should not be subject to this cruelty. Another quote that shows the mistreatment of Native Americans throughout history is, “in the 1850s, California’s leaders wanted to destroy the
The majority of school districts in the U.S. call of school for Columbus Day to honor the “discoverer of our country”. Not only do we falsely idolize this man, but many do not know the horrors that were done unto the Native
Every year in early October, a day rolls around that is considered a national holiday. This is Columbus day. It celebrates the day that Christopher Columbus caught sight of the Americas thousands of years ago. In preparation for this “holiday,” schools all over America, especially elementary schools, do numerous different activities to learn about Columbus. While doing this, they are taught that Columbus was a hero that solely discovered America.
I don't think that we should celebrate Columbus Day. We have been taught since we were young that he is a hero and had done many great things. He is not what he is made out to be.
The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.
Columbus Day is a holiday widely celebrated throughout the Americas. It is a holiday commemorating the voyage, Christopher Columbus made for when he landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. “Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.” His voyage was so successful that when he returned to Spain, he came with goods that the Europeans had never seen. The discovery of new merchandise brought about the Age of Exploration and in 1937, October 12th was officially named Columbus Day and nationally celebrated in the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
