I personally think that Columbus was a good leader but also had his flaws. Columbus took credit for many things that had already been discovered but where he was the first one that mapped everything out and had a record of what took place. When I was younger I thought of Columbus of being an explorer with a name everyone knew by because he was the one that Explored America. However, Christopher wasn’t as honorable as he thought he was going to be. America celebrates Columbus day because, he was the first ones to bring things back from America and also have maps on how to get back and forth.

Many times Christopher Columbus was celebrated. But was he truly a hero? Until recent times, no one knew what harm he did. Now he is criticized and people are torn between celebrating him or to forget about him. In “Columbus and the Indians” by Historian Howard Zinn, Zinn writes about Columbus’s expedition and his terrible treatment of the Native Americans. Nevertheless, “Why we should celebrate Columbus day” , by The Order of the Sons of Italy talks about all the wonderful accomplishments Columbus made. Howard Zinn notes all the harm Columbus did, while The Order of the Sons of Italy believes that Columbus was a hero for discovering America.

Columbus Day should be a day of remembrance for the Native American people, instead of a day of celebration for the historical beginning of America. The Europeans came to America and claimed that they discovered the land. But the truth was that there were Native American people living in America way before the Europeans arrived. The Europeans oppressed the Native Americans.

Celebrating Columbus day is not a suitable thought. Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus who’s known for being an explorer who discovered the first everlasting European colonization in the New World. Columbus day is to celebrate the start of the trading culture between America and Europe. It was first celebrated on October 12, 1792, when the New York Society of Tammany honored Columbus on the 300th anniversary of his first journey.

Christopher Columbus is a famous explorer that is celebrated yearly in America, with his national holiday, Columbus day. However, many people do not know all the negative things he did. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of his negative legacy, his actions, and his lack of accomplishments. Slavery, death, and rape were all part of Columbus’ negative legacy. He had negative actions such as he brought dogs to attack people, caused Native Americans to end their lives, and cut Natives hands off.

Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain in 1492 and claimed all islands around San Salvador looking for gold. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus’ cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because he influenced today's world negatively through slavery,stereotyping, and genocide. Finally, Columbus did not prove anything new because people already lived in the new world, he was not the first non-american

Lately, there have been some questions to whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. This question is highly debateable, but the accomplishments of Columbus overcome any doubt to whether he should be celebrated. Columbus is one of the most recognized explorers ever, he was ambitious, intelligent, and dedicated. Columbus should have a day commemorating him, and that is self evident.

In the United States, there are many holidays that are celebrated by its citizens. Some of these holidays consist of individuals taking the day off from work and school, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. During these days off, individuals have the chance to reflect on the day itself, and rejoice on the purpose of the holiday. Every holiday has a distinct and positive meaning towards the United States and its people, but there is one holiday in particular that is controversial in this aspect- the celebration of Christopher Columbus- Columbus Day. This controversy is JJJJJJ because even though Christopher Columbus had a big role in discovering America, he also was a terrible human being who tortured many. In my opinion, I believe that the celebration of discovering America should continue to be celebrated. Although, the holiday should be shifted from honoring Columbus, to instead celebrating the discovery of the United States of America by the indigenous people who were already settled in our land.

Christopher deserves to be recognized because he recorded his voyage in a way that allowed other want to repeat it. In the text it states “recorded the voyage in a way that enabled others to repeat the feat”(pg1). He also was brave enough to take a new route to get to the east thinking the earth was flat. The text states “He challenged the conventional thought that the earth was flat, seeking to “reach the east by going west”(pg1). Columbus is an important figure because his discovery led to the greatest creation on earth. The passage states “His discovery led to the creation of the greatest nation on Earth, the United States of America(pg1). He went to go explore a new route therefore he was brave to go somewhere no one else had been as far as Columbus new.

Christopher Columbus is commonly known as the “discoverer” of the Americas. From a young age students are taught all the wonderful things he did for our land and how well he interacted with the Natives. Although the truth is disregarded and as students grow, they come to learn that Columbus was not a hero in fact. Columbus came close to causing a genocide of the Native Americans, and basically began the “white power” movement that America is forced to deal with today. The truth of what Christopher Columbus did makes him no better than Hitler, yet America still praises him as an important figure in our history. The actions of Columbus has impacted all Americans lives since the 1400’s when he first landed on American soil. Although it did make America into the super power it is today, the structure within the borders will never be equal because of his abuse of power back then. Christopher Columbus is not the hero American students are taught from a young age and does not deserve any of the praise or recognition that we as American citizens continue to give him on a daily basis.

After many centuries, a lot of controversy still surrounds Christopher Columbus. He remains to be a strange figure in history regarded as a famous explorer and a great mariner who made many discoveries in his days. Other people still regard him as a visionary and a national hero while others chose to remember him as a brutal and greedy person who used the rest of the humanity for his own selfish gains. Despite the fact that there have been protests in his being honored through a holiday referred to as the Columbus Day, he still deserves recognition and acknowledgement as a historical figure performed a great role in the making of the modern world.

When Columbus sailed to prove that the world was round, according to the website Livescience.com, he was late by two-thousand years. Ancient Greek mathematicians already have already proved that the world was round and not flat. Also according to this website, Columbus’s education was self taught and he believed that Europe was wider, and that Japan was further away from China’s coast. These are the reasons that he was going to try and find shorter trade route to Asia. When a student hears Columbus’ name they may instantly think that he was the first person to discover America. Although there were millions of Native Americans who were living in the New World, Columbus is the man who is getting all of the credit for finding the New World. There were also other travelers who had discovered America before Christopher Columbus.

Some say Columbus is a hero and should be recognized, which I believe has some valid points. The main point is that without Columbus we would not of been here with the opportunities we have today. In a video, it says how Columbus was an inspiration to struggling people. I believe that this is a very weak argument that most people bring in. If Columbus never “discovered” America, we would have saved millions of Native Americans and they would never have been placed in reservations that are hideous

Columbus Day! The second Monday in October. A day celebrating Christopher Columbus, which everyone rejoices because no work! A cherished day off. However, keep in mind what we are celebrating on this day. The man who this day honors, celebrates, glorifies, is no hero. He did not discover America. He was not, in any way, a person who should be respected or honored. In celebrating Columbus Day, we are celebrating a man whose true legacy is of genocide, rape, and enslavement.
