Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain in 1492 and claimed all islands around San Salvador looking for gold. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus’ cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.

First of all, I believe that we should keep Columbus day is because he helped establish America as a place for the Europeans to travel to. Even though he thought that he had partially circumnavigated the Earth around to India, his voyage was essential in opening the way for European explorers during the Age of Exploration. This eventually led to colonies being settled in America and eventually the founding of the independent country of the United States of America. The voyages also helped the economy of Europe.

Columbus Day should not be abolished as a national holiday, because Columbus overcame obstacles to arrive in America (Document E). To begin with, Columbus sailed over an unknown sea, without knowing what was on the other side. If it wasn’t for Columbus’ bravery, America would still be unknown to most of us. Second, he made a great proficiency in geography, astronomy, and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation (Document B). Finally, Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds (Document E). In conclusion Columbus overcame obstacles to find America, so we have to show Columbus some appreciation.

My honest opinion is that children of today’s generation should NOT be taught to celebrate a day for an evil man like Christopher Columbus. His entire voyage was a lie. He was searching for China but found the New World. When he arrived, he met dark skinned beings. He gave them the name Indians. These Indians helped Columbus and his crew survive and find gold on their lands. Then Columbus decided to try and enslave these Indians so his crew wouldn’t have to work. Columbus Day should not be celebrated in an evil man’s memory.

The national holiday, Columbus Day, is a day honoring Christopher Columbus. I believe that Columbus isn’t worthy of this holiday because of how he treated the Native Americans. When he found the Americas and met the Native Americans, he murdered, enslaved, tortured, robbed, kidnapped, and forced the native people out of there homes. Columbus wanted all of the and its resources for Europe and didn’t care what he had to do to get it. While doing this, Columbus brought over foreign diseases such as smallpox, yellow fever, and the flu. This killed off a lot of the native popultion. Columbus also forced the native people to become Christian, instead of what they believed in. If you think about it, Christopher Columbus doesn’t deserve a holiday.

Columbus Day is labeled in The United States of America as a whole day to celebrate Christopher Columbus founding America. Kids across America love Columbus Day because they have the day off from school. People who work in Federal Offices get a day off as well, but some are not as happy with the day as the children are.

When we celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others.      The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.

Columbus Day is a holiday widely celebrated throughout the Americas. It is a holiday commemorating the voyage, Christopher Columbus made for when he landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492. “Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.” His voyage was so successful that when he returned to Spain, he came with goods that the Europeans had never seen. The discovery of new merchandise brought about the Age of Exploration and in 1937, October 12th was officially named Columbus Day and nationally celebrated in the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
