Take On Christopher Columbus - Social 10 - Cassiopeia In my opinion, we should not celebrate Christopher Columbus Day. This is because Columbus has committed many harsh and cruel crimes against the aboriginal peoples of North America, he didn't actually prove the earth was round, and he wasn't even really the first (white) person to discover it. Firstly, Columbus was in fact a murdered who enslaved other human beings for the purpose of obtaining gold. He mistreated these people horribly often cutting their hands off if they didn't supply him with the gold he desired. He permitted the rape and murder of first nations women and they were often killed as sport. This is absolutely horrible and no man should be celebrated when he has committed
When you were a kid, you were taught that Christopher Columbus was this great explorer and person. That’s why we celebrate Columbus Day, but little did you know that he was a really twisted and corrupted person. Columbus should be remembered in a bad way because he led to the enslavement of the Native American people, slaughtered them, but a cultural exchange with the “New World” and the Europeans was started because of him.
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was very cruel to the Native Americans. In truth it’s very sad what he did. What Columbus did was what some call the American Holocaust. He forced the native peoples to be Christian, murdering and torturing them is they didn’t convert. Columbus pillaged and robbed- eating the food the natives worked hard to get. He forced them to mine, harvest, grow, and plant all of the food and gold. The diseases that were brought killed thousands, wiping out entire groups in a few months. The killing and torture made the relationship between natives and Englishmen worse. Clearly, Christopher Columbus isn’t worthy of a holiday.
Hooray or not? Not! Christopher Columbus day should not be celebrated! Who wants to celebrate an awful man who wasn’t even the first person to discover the U.S. He also killed thousands of people!
I think that Columbus should be celebrated or at least recognized. While Columbus did do some terrible things like supporting slave trade and destroying the indigenous people. He also started the beginning of the Age of Exploration which played a huge role in shaping history. His efforts really bridged the gap between the New World and the Old World. This resulted in a vast expansion of goods, technology, and culture between them. Though he wasn’t the first to discover America, he started an incredible expedition that has had serious effects on the advancements in today’s society. Though what he did was horrible, conquests and slavery were not only common practices of the time but important parts of the development of civilization. Colonization
I don’t think that the United States should recognize Colombus Day as Indigenous Day because of the conteversy that Columbus caused to the Native americans . Christopher Colombus was getting create for something that he didn’t discover. The native americans got little to no credit for being there first. We don’t get to learn about how Colombus treated the Native Americans as well. The only thing that America praises him for is the discovery of new land.
Have you ever met someone who wasn’t who you thought they were? Maybe you shouldn’t trust only one source. Textbooks often only show one side of the story. New evidence proves that Columbus is not who he seems. Due to this information, Columbus Day should be changed.
Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.
In my opinion, however, I feel that Columbus Day Day should be reconsidered as a holiday. You state that an Italian arrived and discovered the United States. If that were true the land wouldn't already have been populated. The Native Americans were on American soil far before any Italians or Pilgrims came along. To have discovered America, it would have been uninhabited
My honest opinion is that children of today’s generation should NOT be taught to celebrate a day for an evil man like Christopher Columbus. His entire voyage was a lie. He was searching for China but found the New World. When he arrived, he met dark skinned beings. He gave them the name Indians. These Indians helped Columbus and his crew survive and find gold on their lands. Then Columbus decided to try and enslave these Indians so his crew wouldn’t have to work. Columbus Day should not be celebrated in an evil man’s memory.
The second Monday in October is celebrated across America as Columbus Day. It is a celebration of the man who discovered America. In school, children are taught that Christopher Columbus was a national hero. In actuality, the man was a murderer. It is true that he found a land that was unknown to the "civilized" world, yet in this discovery, he erased the natives inhabiting the land. With slavery, warfare, and inhumane acts, Christopher Columbus and the men who accompanied him completely destroyed a people, a culture, and a land. These are not actions that should be heralded as heroic.
To start off, Indigenous People’s Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called “Columbus Day”? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe today, “discovered” America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there could’ve been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I found called “www.scholastic.com” stated, “ The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus's sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans.” So, basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to see and discover the Americas. Another source titled “www.osia.org” stated “Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious principles to America.” From one’s point of view, it may look like Columbus did many great things that led to the development of America. But no one really knows what was at stake because of Columbus’ decisions. A con relating to the naming of Columbus Day is in a
The United States only honors two men with federal holidays bearing their names, Martin Luther King Jr., and Christopher Columbus. When we celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others. The true discoverers of the land Columbus encountered are the ancestors of the native people who were living there when he arrived. Unfortunately, the public education system of the United States has failed to teach the entire truth about Christopher
The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
Christopher Columbus was(and still is) celebrated. But more and more people are starting to question his voyage. The order sons of Italy wrote in “ why we should celebrate Columbus day” that Columbus is a positive figure and that his expeditions had many positive consequences. But Howard Zinn writes in “ Columbus and the Indians that he was an enslaver who killed many people. Another point of view is Mary Ann Castronovo’s, she writes in “ in person; in defense of Columbus” that Columbus should be remembered but not celebrated. This shows that Columbus is a debated and challenged character in our past.
