Good things can be bad if you look on the dark side, but bad things can also be good if you look on the bright side. This applies to the exposure of violent media towards young people. Violent media is everywhere from TV shows, games, toys, books, movies, and music. I believe that the exposure to violent media has a bad influence on kids. Violent media can pop up from anywhere how are they exposed to it, how it can impact kids negatively, and the influences that it gives.
Violent media comes in all shapes and sizes. Kids and teens are exposed to violence every day of their life. Through music, gaming, tv shows, and the internet. “Prolonged exposure to such media portrayals results in increased acceptance of violence as an appropriate means of solving problems and achieving one's goals”( Media Violence). This proves that violence will be a key to achieving an objective. This is a negative effect on an exposure with violent media, having kids believe that you can get what you want through violence. This also proves that if a child would see themselves as the good guy, everyone that disagrees with this child must be a bad guy, which can cause a problem in an everyday life. “Children in grades 4 through 8 preferentially choose video games that award points for violence against others, and 7 of 10 children in grades 4 through 12 report playing M-rated (mature) games, with 78% of boys reporting owning M-rated games”( Media Violence). With this exposure at hand, and rewarding kids to commit violent acts toward others is a shoddy misuse of the media. This proves that at young minds are shaped towards violence, which can cause problems when they get older.
Violent media can affect every child differently, but hitting young targets can cause a negative effect. “Research has associated exposure to media violence with a variety of physical and mental health problems for children and adolescents, including aggressive and violent behavior, bullying, desensitization to violence, fear, depression, nightmares, and sleep disturbances”(Media Violence). This demonstrates the influence among kids when they are exposed to the violent media. This should not be any characteristics among kids to have especially bullying,
Children who are exposed to violent media may be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others. Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others as they deal with killing and cruelty most of the time. All shows and games need the kid to kill his enemy to win, he feels happy after killing or destroying whatever facing him to reach the top. That's why I'm not surprised when they become violent or cruel, they enjoy the surfing of others and this moves with them psychologically from media to reality. This is the moment when the kid starts to change into a monster. Also, children who watch a lot of violent T.V shows are more likely to think that the world is a mean and dangerous place. Imagine, when your life is full of fear, running, killing and blood, what will you feel. Of course you will be afraid of living in such world. You will expect harmful actions from outside world all the time and as a result you will be terrified and live in fear from the entire world. Violent shows or video games are really harmful not only for children but for all the family, society and the world as well.
When it comes to the topic of violent media, some of us would readily agree it’s a controversial subject as to whether kids should or shouldn’t be exposed to it. This is because many children who view violent media react negatively rather than not being affected at all. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what effects does it have on children. Whereas some are convinced that it is a healthy alternative for kids to express themselves, others maintain that it causes kids to become more aggressive and contributes to juvenile crimes.
THESIS STATEMENT: The world’s media today seem to have more violence than ever. Video games have vivid depictions of accident catastrophes, fighting and murder. Television news programs generally lead with a violent story in order to gain an audience. This is free society people can stay what they want. ‘’ Media violence has many negative effect on youth today to commit crimes in society.’’
In the media there is a great deal of violence and nobody can really deny that. However, the effects media has on children and young adults have been debated for years. In this paper I will be discussing the effects of media violence, the other factors, and the possible solutions to alleviate this global issue.
According to Gerard Jones’s “ Violent Media Is Good For Kids,” violent media indeed has a remarkable influence upon the minds and general growth patterns of children. Jones argues that violent media can actually have positive effects on young people.
Hi Ju Young, I like this because it really did inform me about how violent media does have an effect on young children. For example, you found how violent video games can make children become violent, “‘the violent scripts observed in many violent video games to carry a weapon. This behavior also would be consistent with the schemas taught by the games that the world is a hostile place, and the beliefs promoted by the games that aggression is normative’ (Ybarra). Consistently, little children tend to mimic what they see on media such as TV shows, movies, and video games. Therefore, the likelihood of aggressive and the violent behavior increase from different term contexts. Importantly, early exposure to violent media in childhood leads to
Violent media; a strikingly relevant phenomenon millions are becoming captivated by. It’s everywhere you go, on your phone, the TV or on the computer. As much as people try to avoid it, they soon realize it’s ineluctable. Gerard Jones, a comic-book author, released a brief report, “Violent Media Is Good for Kids” that argued violent media is not only beneficial to children but also inspiring. He goes on to support his claim by sampling his own personal experiences. However, not all forms of violent media are necessarily helpful. Some are more preferable while others can harm them. To an extent, violent media can help children by helping them release built up emotions, learn lessons regarding the real world, as well as create something for themselves.
Violent Media Is Good for Kids by Gerard Jones is a very well written essay. It explains the basic factors of violent media and the positive effects of it on the children. However, is this really true? Are the children really benefiting from watching violent shows? Are violent video games helping out the children? Answer to these questions is no. Violence was never good and never will be. Violent Media is a weapon that is mostly used in many countries for destruction and criticizing the political system. Lastly, it is best to shield our children from all forms of violence.
Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerald Jones; a persuasive article written by a comic book author that analyzes how exposing children to violent media has positive effects in shaping a person. This article was written as a counter-argument to the negative response media received after a horrific mass shooting that took place at a high school. Jones defends violent media by telling of his own personal experience with it, thus glorifying it in the process. Jones argues in his article that violent media is a helpful resource for children and it does not necessarily harm them. Jones’ argument was effective and very convincing. He defends his stance by continuously stating the positives that violent media has had not only on him, but his own son as well.
Over the past two decades, hundreds of studies have examined how violent programming on TV affects children and young people. While a direct "cause and effect" link is difficult to establish, there is a growing consensus that some children may be vulnerable to violent images and messages.
Violent media is not always about bad impact but also positive effect can be received by children. Here is the positive impact of violent media, can make children explore their feeling like know about afraid and guilty, face a bad day in their life in relax way, and realize that life is not always be nice but they
In the book Critique of Violence ,author Walter describes Violence as "The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, male development, or deprivation .The violence that is portrayed in the media has been debated for decades ,and it has rose a question about how does it influence the youth?. From movies to video games society has been accustom to seeing violence in their everyday entertainment. Since children are easy to be influence by their environment, it is safe to say that violence in the media can and will contribute to violent behavior.
Today’s society is heavily influenced by television. The violence disrupts a child’s learning process and can alter the moral beliefs that an older person has. Children view more violence on Saturday mornings than any other time. The cartoons aimed at little children influence youngsters to mimic violent acts because their parents do not fully explain the effects of the stunts. It is pathetic that in such a technology based society, such a simple thing as television can have a negative effect on people.
"Impact of media use on children and youth” explores the good and bad effects that media can have on a young child’s development both mentally and physically. In the beginning of the article, they provided examples of how watching television can expose young children to violence, sexuality, and offensive language. The author made an interesting point that connected an increase in violent behaviors with children who watch violent
The media is a part of everyday life in American kids. Children are surrounded by technology, entertainment, and other media that is full of violence. Newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and the internet all contain violence. Today's media has a negative influence on children. The media does have an influence on them, but does it really influence them to act out even though they know it's wrong? Mass media, and its components, are very powerful and can influence one's mind, as well as their behavior. Children that imitate characters who use violence in the media and display aggressive behavior, tend to give them reason to believe that violence can happen without consequence. For children who grow up with poor adult examples or an
