When I bought the book “Lives on The Boundary”, I didn’t really know what to expect. I tactlessly thought that the book would be dry and tough to read. However, I am pleased to say that it’s without a doubt the best book I have been required to read since I started college. The way Rose is able to make so many students of today’s day and age relate to what he has written is praiseworthy. Especially, considering the time frame in which it was written. It’s almost shocking that there are still so many of these exact problems today. There are so many people out there today who are educationally underprepared. The sentiment I got from him meeting McFarland was empowering and I am sure this book has invoked the same emotion and thought too many
I would not have finished reading his book had it not been about places that I have traveled to and names of people I am familiar with. It is confusing and choppy. Sometimes it had to be read more than once to make sure I was following his thoughts correctly.
Eventually, Rose finds teachers that inspire him, which helps him get through his mundane life at Loyola. He begins to become more engaged and curious about his career in language with the help of his professors, Don Johnson, Frank Carothers, Ted Erlandson, and Clint Albertson; he is not afraid of asking for help when he needs it, in contrast to his other classes. He arrives at a point in his college
First, in his article, Rose sets the scene by efficiently using personal anecdote as an essential to achieve the emotions of the readers to argue his claim. Rose introduces his readers
Also what I understood is for example how Rose had Mr.MacFarland to help him out and push him and make him to things schooling wise it made rose better himself and want to excel in school. Wich helped him out because he made something out of himself and he proved others wrong that one from the lower class can be something in
In Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average”, readers can determine from what he says that teachers play an integral role in the educations of students. When others are teaching you what to do, it becomes easier to understand; when others are not teaching you, it becomes harder to understand. You can tell how essential a teacher is to a student if you were to read Rose’s narrative and see that: students float to expectations, if teachers don’t expect anything of you they won’t help you, and how beneficial it is to have a teacher who challenges you to be better.
He makes several good points and uses such wording in this paragraph that really affects the reader.
Alberto Rios claims that the border is unnatural, complex, and seen as a boundary. He discusses empathetic relationships in a global society when he uses many literary devices to claim that the border is an unnatural thing in a natural world, it has become so complex that it is unrecognizable, and that many people view it as a boundary when it should be viewed as what joins us together. The border is unnatural because it is something manmade placed in the natural world as if the people believed that it was supposed to be natural as well. What started as a simple rancher’s fence to fix a simple problem, quickly escalated to be something as complex as a third grader trying to understand calculus. The people view the border as a boundary meant to divide when in reality, it is what joins us together as a global society.
The students in this track were often labeled as “unruly, and not motivated” and of course the parents and students are faced with embarrassment which can be tragic just from an error this school had made. If Professor Rose had not taken that single Biology course his sophomore year in “Our Lady of Mercy” his educational career as a professor would not have been a success. It is always very important teachers understand the importance and responsibility of their role that is in these student’s everyday lives, they shape the way these students think, and understand everyday education we use. During the essay Ken Harvey mentions that he just wants to be average and considers himself to be below average while Rose is thinking to himself what an absurd comment it was. When an individual is constantly told that he or she is not smart they can’t do this or that it lowers their confidence and they actually start working at that level and not striving for the highest standard. Teachers and or professors have many responsibilities including the most important one which is knowing and making sure the student or child understands every single lesson they teach.
Rose Maxson illustrated strength and dignity, but during the 1950s those qualities were taken for granted time after time. She portrayed the protagonist and was the person whose actions the viewer followed. Throughout the movie Rose was the true mother figure and symbolized life and creation. Her name was even a form of imagery representing nurture, kindness, care, and love. These were all descriptions that she embodied as a wife and a mother, but unfortunately, she did not receive the respect and care that she deserved. Every stereotype at that time was the way she lived. House was always clean, food was always ready, and the words that came out of her mouth were never listened to or cared about. Not only did Troy expect her to do the housework and not have a voice, but he expected Rose to be understanding about a continuous affair with another woman. Rose was not given the same rights as Troy and the Birmingham Feminist group (2005) recognized this when they were researching feminism in the fifties and said, “we as feminists today do not easily recognize its activities as feminist,” because there was little to no movement when it came to equality for the housewife. As a woman during a time of low feminist movement, Rose was not granted the voice she deserved.
This novel greatly broadened my view of the world and emphasized that no one can truly understand another person without having gone through the same circumstances and having the same perspectives in life. I
The most significant part of the entire text is that most of the readers will never feel the pain of author. The ability not to be able to relate and understand someone’s struggle is very impactful.
inspirational message for readers. His book got good market in his society and it was biggest
Did this book inspire you to want to do more research on the subject? Why? Why not?
I found reading interesting for a number of reasons. What struck me the most was the way he wrote about being an Indian child who did not want to be ignorant. In this reading I really feel like he gave me a peak at his heart. When he wrote about going back to the reservation to teach the kids poetry and short stories.
He has for years been a leading light in the field of motivational education, and you have to say that he has a kind of in-your-face style that demands your attention, which is perhaps one of the reasons why his work, and this volume - The Icarus Deception - are so interesting.
