Feminism In The Movie Fences

Decent Essays

After watching the movie Fences, written by August Wilson, and directed by Denzel Washington, I decided to take a Feminist approach to this piece to assist me in understanding the inner struggles of women in the 1950’s. This movie can be interpreted through many different lenses, but as I looked through the lens of gender equality I gained insight into the oppression and mistreatment that the women felt. The story engages the idea of men going to work and the women waiting for them with a fresh-cooked meal when they arrived at home. Rose portrayed the housewife and she was the character that grasped my attention when it came to the unfairness portrayed at the time. The way in which she is mistreated and looked down upon by Troy shows the need to discuss the lack of feminist movement at that time. Through divulging in the movie, I noticed that sexism was not only present in Rose but in the lives of Alberta and Raynell.
Rose Maxson illustrated strength and dignity, but during the 1950s those qualities were taken for granted time after time. She portrayed the protagonist and was the person whose actions the viewer followed. Throughout the movie Rose was the true mother figure and symbolized life and creation. Her name was even a form of imagery representing nurture, kindness, care, and love. Not only did Troy expect her to do the housework and not have a voice, but he expected Rose to be understanding about a continuous affair with another woman. Rose was not given the same rights as Troy and the Birmingham Feminist group (2005) recognized this when they were researching feminism in the fifties and said, “we as feminists today do not easily recognize its activities as feminist,” because there was little to no movement when it came to equality for the housewife. As a woman during a time of low feminist movement, Rose was not granted the voice she deserved.
