What is a family? Family is often categorized as being people with whom you share the same blood. While it is true, family often tends to go a lot deeper than that. Being a family means loving each other and trusting each other. In the novel “The Marrow Thieves”, it demonstrates to us that you can still be a family regardless of your biological relationship.

Even though every person will get into many other relationships with people such as friends and lovers throughout their life, his/her family is the only relationship that came by nature. Family is something that no one can deny, because of the connection in blood and genes. A family can be defined in many different ways and almost every person has their own view and definition of families. Some may define it as simply as the blood relatives they have grown up with, living in the same home for most of their life. Whereas others, including myself, have a much more in depth or personable definition. No matter the culture or living situation, my definition of a family is the people I know will be there for me whenever I need them to be. This includes not only my actual blood related siblings, parents, grandparents and cousins but also my best friends and even some of my parents’ close friends that I have known the majority of my life. Family should not be defined by blood. I have an aunt that was adopted which means she is not blood related, but I still fully consider her family, I believe this has an impact on my own definition of a family. Television today has changed the views and stereotypes on American Families. Stereotypes include the family having a mother and father living in the same home where the mother is a stay at home mom, while the father makes a living for the family. Also the family is usually Caucasian and considered wealthy, living in the suburbs. The shows such as Full House, Good Luck Charlie Keeping Up With The Kardashians have had a major impact on how societies view families in this day and age because of the way they follow these American Stereotypes.

In the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch there is a girl who lives with her older sister named Nani. They both live together without their parents in Hawaii, but them being separated from their parents does not mean they are not a family. Lilo states in the movie “Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. This means that families will always be there even when we are separated. A family comes from all different shapes and sizes whether just being the only child or having brothers and sisters. The definition of a family is love because we care for one another, supporting each other, and help one another no matter what.

Family comes in all shapes and sizes; color, similarities and differences, but at the heart of it all, family is the solidified foundation to one belonging and feeling loved.

I believe that everyone is born with freewill. One may have been given a biological family at birth but as they develop into an adult, they have the freewill to choose who they want to be acquainted and afflicted with if their family is not living up to the expectation of what a family is. To me, a family has many forms. Some only consider family those related biologically, but I believe family means for than just biological connection. Family may be through marriage, adoption, friends, or pets that make impact ones life. The texts definition supports my view of a family.
