Gang Violence Gangs are becoming a growing problem in American society. More young people are turning to gangs to solve problems in there lives. When youths join gangs they drop social activities with family, friends and school. Members fall behind their classmates in school and do not try. A study shows that less than 1% of gang bangers is literate1. Gangs destroy teenager lives and destroy their chances for a good education and happy life. Gangs are now a haven for rats. Teenagers are joining gangs every day. They join gangs for many reasons. A former gang member known as G-Ball was very young when he joined a his gang. He and a friend would play a game. They would pose as gang members to be cool. Then police arrested …show more content…
Graffiti comes in many forms. Pictures are used to mark property (turf) but you may also see strange writing below it. They say to other gangs that they're the best, the number 1 gang, and to stay away from them. Here are some writings found in California. Many gang members wear similar clothes or color. A school in Baytown, Texas has banned its students from wearing the following "gang clothing" -Solid red or black shirt with pants or skirt -Solid red or white shirt over a black shirt -Red and black flannel shirt or jacket -Blue and black flannel shirt or jacket -Clothing with Chicago Bulls, White Sox, Los Angles Raiders, Kings, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, or University of Miami Logos Everyone believes these types of clothes are worn by gang members. "But what if they start wearing 3-piece suits or Mickey Mouse T-shirts? When will it end." Richard Sallivan, 40.3 Many gangs use hand signs (like sign language). Signs are flashed to gang members or to rival gangs. These signs say we are number one, or Power. They also have signs to show victory and a primo sign after a fight or gang war. Signs can represent gang names. Some examples are Mafia Crips, Athens Park Boys, or the Underground crip. Signs are shown below. While gangs grow and get more powerful, what is being done? City police departments play a big role in stopping violence and drugs. The most popular
First: they were the first gang in Chicago (Quite possibly the whole USA too) to ever using gang signs. The sign was the formation of 2 hands in the shape of a Cobras head.
“Gangs have morphed from social organizations into full-fledged criminal enterprises” (Thomas, 2009, para 5). Gangs are highly sophisticated and more dangerous then ever. The number one reason to join a gang is money; and 95 percent of gangs profit comes from drug dealing
Symbolize interaction is defined from the perspective of sociological point of view, it shows how's each individual's in the group interacts. The symbolize interaction views on gang viloecne is on the symbols demonstrated by each member of the gang. Either by hand signals or the different color or certain tattoos. Hand signals are used to widely in there gang to comunate with there peers. a specific color or clothing can demonstrate which particular gang you belong to. While representation varies based on individual preferences, the general sign of the Aryan Brotherhood comes in the form of a shamrock, the letters “AB”, or three sixes. Members of the prison gang will generally have these symbols tattooed somewhere on their body. Only members of the AB are permitted to wear the “brand” of the gang and individuals found to be wearing the tattoo without consent of AB leadership are subject to death (Diaz, 2013).
There are many rituals for the gang. Strict rules and practices have kept them out of the limelight and public eye for almost five decades. New recruits, or prospects, are hazed without mercy. Members of the gang will do or take whatever they want from them, whenever they want. They might show up to their house and take their possessions or “take their woman and sell them or beat them if they want,” says Wadds. When a new member is initiated, it is considered the first day of his life. Members are

A trademark of the MS-13, they have “established a reputation for extreme violence and for killing with machetes” (BBC). The MS-13 boast their tattoos and do not hide who their criminal activities, evident of the slaughtering of four young-males in New York last week. Although there is little overall leadership in the MS-13, the cliques formed are ripened with familial structure. The members will kill, rape, and die for each other at the expense of everyone else. Since they have inferior structure, the MS-13 employ a street type of gang activity. he MS-13 are easy to spot in a crowd because their tattoos are apparent and extravagant. Common tattoos include “MS-13, “MS”, “Salvatrucha”, the “Devil Horns”, and the name of their clique. However, similar to other gangs, they have “been moving away from the tattoos in an effort to commit crimes without being noticed and get away with them” (weebly). MS-13 typically wear blue and white, the colors of the El Salvadoran flag, bandanas, and sports jerseys with the numbers 13, 23, or 3. Although the MS-13 include various ages, they are strict when it comes to ethnicity in their membership. The majority of members are Hispanic and, specifically, are from Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The MS-13 are regularly the lone wolf in the gang world, but are starting to form more concrete relationships with Mexican cartels (i.e. the Zetas) to heighten their drug trafficking
Ultimately, these gangs thrive on secrecy and loyalty. Leaders are noticeably different from their followers. They may be older, physically stronger or larger, they commission acts of violence and their leadership qualities elevate a member through the gang hierarchy (CJ institute,
The bloods and crips are hand gestures that show which gang they are in. Also, gangs from long ago weren’t quite as violent. They fought, but guns were hardly ever involved, only switch blades that very rarely were used, they were just threats to show they could be used. Now, you never know when someone is walking around with a gun, and could just kill you any minute. Gangs were a lot safer long
These boys never considered themselves a gang, instead they called them clubs, but they did use intimidation and were often territorial. They would often fight with neighboring boys and when they started getting in trouble with
At any rate, it is very clear that some youths engage in more gang activity than others; some might be called "the wannabes" who move out of the influence of the gang on the basis of whether or not a program of interest intercepts drawing them completely away from the gang. Within the "wannabes" there are many little brothers and sisters, sometimes referred to as "pee wees." However, on separate and certain occasions they are sent home by their older siblings when something was about to happen for which only older members were being mobilized. Moreover, I am going to go into explicit detail on two Hispanic gangs The Mexican Mafia, the Nuestra Familia, and the Latin Kings.
Street gangs in this country can probably be traced back to the first wave of Europeans who migrated to the colonies for a better life for themselves and their families. Many of the first gangs were formed as a means of self protection, with the thinking that there is simply strength in numbers. The missions of gangs in today’s society have grown and emerged to include many violent criminal avenues, including drug trafficking, prostitution, money laundering, and extortion but the original thinking that there is strength in numbers remains true. Criminology experts believe that the number of teens involved in gangs or gang activity may be as high as 1 in every 5 people in most urban areas. Those number jump to 1 in every 3 people in
Gang affiliation has taken a vital step into our society, flooding into streets in every corner struck by poverty. 9 out of 10 teens in detention are in some kind of gang affiliation. Statistics have proven that every city in the US that have more than 250,000 people has also gang activity in it. People in gang involvement have a high risk of low income, failure on education, even to committing crimes. This quote from the book helps support this.
“According to statistics from the National Youth Gang Center, more than 24,500 gangs, consisting of more than 770,000 members, exist in about 3,300 cities in the U.S.” (Rank 1). Although it is not illegal to be a member of a gang, it should be noted many gangs participate in illegal activity for funding and will use the money as a way to entice new membership. The “money begins flowing, and with that comes all of the things associated with material wealth that is usually beyond the reach of these adolescents without the criminal activity of being involved in a gang” (Nawojczyk 3).
Gang members in particular take pride in branding themselves as outside of the boundaries of conventional society(ukessay) Tattoos have long been a means of identifying oneself with a group or culture and because people have used tattoos for gang purposes that is not the only things tattoos stands for people see tattoos as and I feel like automactically assume you’re a gang member.
