Have you ever thought about how gangs were long ago versus gangs today? Have you heard anyone say that something is the same but different? I read a book, The Outsiders, which showed how gangs were long ago. The gangs of long ago were very different from the gangs of today, but they’re also very similar to the gangs today. Things were done differently back then than now. I’ll be telling you about the similarities and the differences of the gangs from long ago to the gangs of today. First, a major difference would be the main concept of gangs. Long ago, gangs were just a group friends. They never meant to cause anyone harm unless someone messed with them. Gangs now a days have plans to ruin peoples lives. Gangs like to rob houses, steal things, kill people, all on purpose. They don’t always have a reason to do the things they do, the just do it. The gangs of long ago had reasons. Another difference would be the way the gangs dressed. Long ago, rich gangs wore plaid or striped shirts and always looked nice. The poorer gangs wore leather jackets, and usually jeans and a white shirt. The gangs of today …show more content…
The gangs of back then didn’t really have any special words or sayings that I really noticed. The gangs of today do. The gangs of today also have hand gestures unlike the gangs of long ago. For example, two main gangs that I know about are the bloods and crips. The bloods try to change words that start with c’s to starting with b’s, whereas the crips try to change words that start with b’s to starting with c’s. The bloods and crips are hand gestures that show which gang they are in. Also, gangs from long ago weren’t quite as violent. They fought, but guns were hardly ever involved, only switch blades that very rarely were used, they were just threats to show they could be used. Now, you never know when someone is walking around with a gun, and could just kill you any minute. Gangs were a lot safer long
Gangs have been around for many years; the founders of some of the original gangs in the United States will be discussed. The statistics of youth gangs in Canada will be presented followed by an in depth discussion about why young adults can be persuade into
Gangs reorganized and many combined their gangs into one bigger enterprise. Gangs were mostly run from prisons during the 1970’s and on (Brief outline); therefore one could not escape the gangs. Gangs shaped Chicago early on.
Gangs use many different things to identify themselves, they use graffiti, and their are still many rivalries between modern gangs today like the Montagues and Capulets. Their are many ways that gangs identify themselves. Just like the Montagues and Capulets with ways to know who's who. For example the Hispanic gangs according to Los Angeles police department say that they wear "white T-shirts, thin belts, baggy pants with split cuffs, and a black or knit cap or a bandana tied around the forehead similar
Gangs were a huge part of the 1920s/30s, and were first formed during the prohibition era. When the 18th amendment was ratified, there was even more crime and violence than intended. People would do anything for alcohol, so these gangs practically took care of that and made huge amounts of money. Even when prohibition was over, gang remained intact. Some famous gangsters, beides Bonnie and Clyde, were Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly.
There are two main gangs in this city. There are the Greasers and the Socs. The two gangs are very much different than each other. From the west side, there are the Socs, and the east side, Greasers. Without these two gangs, then the city would definitely different.
From the outside looking in, many would few gangs as a tight knit, criminal enterprise that causes violence and problems for the community. They believe that their violence and feuds are with rival gangs. In reality, gang members fight against members of the same gang, they are not organized in their structure and many join gangs to meet some psychological or emotional
The 1960’s or 1970’s is when gangs were originated. Gangs became a formation of protection against racial crimes being committed by whites. There were quite a few popular gangs such as the Slausons,
While they might sport the tattoos, the jackets, colors, and signs, often these members are only tangentially affiliated. According to much of the available literature, tattoos also serve as a badge of protection against coercion from other gangs (Jackson and McBride 1985). In the current study, tattoos signify a number of different and personal matters, only one of which gang membership and a warning to others.
The look and study of street gangs have been shifting over the past 4-5 decades due to changes in the tactics taken by sociologists. There were many books written about these gangs including “The Gang” , by Thrasher, which was recognized as one of the first or if not the first gang related to sociological views. People ask questions such as, “Why do people join these gangs and why do most of them end up causing havoc and violence within a city.” This is a question a normal person that isn’t looking at these people as subjects due for change but rather people who aren’t “normal”. Sociologists look at these people and ask questions like, “Where do they live? Who are they friends with? How and why did their social practices and cultural values change?” These are questions a sociologist would ask simply because there are many factors which come out when determining the choices of deviance within a person.
Gangs in Chicago go hand and hand because of the rich history this topic has to offer. Coincidence? One may think not. In the time of famous mobster, Al Capone, gangs in Chicago were just evolving but did not live up to the names they have today. This includes their literal name, “gangs” , and the reputation they have today. However, groups similar to these of today have been around since the beginning of time, and not until after Al Capone did these groups get their name of “gang(s)”. Before they were just known as “mobs”. These sort of “gangs” were groups that had similar interests, backgrounds and goals they had in common. However, there is a difference between them then and now, but there are similar characteristics as well. The makeup of gangs today seem to have the same consistent patterns in terms of people who join, how they join, and where they join.
I think the most surprising myths about gangs from reading the material is that the want to-be is a going to be section. I lived in Peoria Illinois for a time when I was younger we lived in the Greeley projects, there were a lot of tough kids there that claimed to be members of a gang. I being ten years old and new to the area believed them. But now that I’m older I understand that they were just wannabes acting like they were gang members, I’ve actually talk to some of them on Facebook now who are well into 40s and most are married and have kids of their own living in suburbs with 9-to-5 jobs. I think growing up in the 80s it seem like everyone wanted to be a member of a gang, maybe it was the mystique of being feared by others around you
Gang involvement and its associated violent crime have become a rapidly growing problem for the United States. Generally, gangs consist of young people of the same ethnic, racial, and economic background. Usually of a low socio-economic status, these gangs engage in illegal money making activities and intimidate their neighborhoods and rival gangs with violent crimes and victimization. Gang members exemplify a high value for group loyalty and sacrifice.
violence have changed over the last 90 years. Gang violence started during the early years of the
Since each community had their own gang, there were several of them. There was the Chinese, Irish, Jewish, and Italian gangs. Each gang had their own style. For example: there was the Dead Rabbits gang. They were known for attacking regular civilians in broad daylight. They got their name by the unforgettable dead rabbits they carried on sticks while beating people up.
Gangs are becoming prevalent in today’s society and within our schools. More and more young people are turning to gangs in an attempt to escape their everyday lives and the future, which they perceive as dismal and bleak. They are initially attracted to the prestige and cash flow, which is glamorized by the street gang. Many gangs are actively involved in criminal misconduct, such as drug and gun trafficking, burglaries and homicides. However, street gangs are not just a criminal justice issue, but a social problem, which is triggered by poverty, peer pressure, boredom, despair and lacking a sense of belonging.
