Emily’s mom continued to allow Emily to go to the nursery and be mistreated by the teachers there. Emily’s dislike and fear for going to the nursery led her to make excuses such as, “Momma, I feel sick”, “Momma, we can’t go, there was a fire there last night,” Momma, it’s a holiday today, no school, they told me (par. 15).” Her feeling and rational belief that the nursery is a petrifying place, resulted in a hated outlook on school. As a mother instead of looking for alternative care, she decides to give into Emily, and let her stay home affecting her ability to socialize with other children her age.

Go back in time think of what it would be like to live in the 70’s, where everything was disco, and women were looked at from a whole new perspective. Within the town of woodsberry there was a little girl named Emily who was 9 years old, but she always felt like she was all grown up. She was a proper girl who always liked to dress-up and wear her mother’s shoes, although there weren’t many shoes, she made do with what she was given. Her mother, Eleina was a 32 year old housewife and her father, Jonah was a 36 year old factory manager. They lived in a 2 bedroom apartment right by main street; one of the busiest streets in the city.

Emily is faced with a problem -- that is, someone is sneaking into her room and stealing small pieces of jewelry, handkerchiefs, cigarettes, etc. Emily suspects that Mrs. Allen is the culprit and thus visits her room to confront her. While visiting Mrs. Allen, Emily initially displays a sense of respect for the elder Mrs. Allen, complementing her ability to decorate and personalize her room. Emily refrains from disrespectfully “jumping” on Mrs. Allen and does not blatantly accuse her of stealing. Rather, Emily slowly introduces her problem, explaining her dilemma, gradually implying Mrs. Allen’s involvement until she remarks “It has to stop. If it doesn’t, I’ll have to do something about it.”

She ruffled through her bag in attempt to find something useful. Her face lit up is it was greeted by a walkie-talkie. She switched her walkie-talkie on and started talking.

Maisie looked at her fingers which she had written “GAME” on her right hand and “OVER” on her left. She practiced her punches with her fist against the air, making a sound effect after each hit. Her dad was a street wrestler and had shown her some tricks for self defense, although Maisie only used them for anything but that. After they each finished drawing the symbols on their arms with the marker, they got up and headed towards the door. They all wore the same school uniform which consisted of navy blue collared shirt and a white tennis skirt with white sneakers. Maisie stopped at a mirror to look at her new nose piercing she made with her mom’s sewing needle as the other two waited by the door. It was still red and sore but she acted like it didn't hurt. She walked through the two girls, pushing them aside with her elbows and grabbed onto the door handle. The door had to be opened a special way because it had been so beat up. Emily’s mother initially resists, claiming that, even though she is Emily’s mother, she does not have the key to unlock the secrets of her daughter (Olsen 1). However, her mind transports her back in time to contemplate the facets of Emily’s childhood from the moment she proclaims in the first line, “‘I stand here ironing, and what you asked me moves tormented back and forth’”

Emily took a big breath. She ran forward………and put her arm out. Margret looked up in confused. But she grabbed it anyways. She let go of her hand, and tried to hobble, but ended up falling again.

The grandmother still in a frenzy gathering her thoughts together blurted out ‘We rolled over twice’ but then the older guy corrected her saying he saw the accident (possibly from afar) and saw the car roll over ‘once’ he said. The unfortunate part of this predicament came as the grandmother studied the man a bit more. she seemed to recognize him so she begun to stare more intensely at his face as he spoke. She soon noticed that he was ‘The Misfit’ who had escaped from prison.
