On Wednesday's class there were different students representing clubs and organizations at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The students who represented FAMU Connections talked how their organization recruit students through song and dance. The Greek student talked about the pros and cons of joining sorority and fraternity. When a person joins a sorority or fraternity he or she expands their social circle. They are also up for different leadership opportunities, a brotherhood/sisterhood, and also networking with older members or younger members. By using a collection of interviews and recollections, the audience receives both sides about the truth of fraternities while lacking any sort of bias. Throughout the article you made it clear that a solution to ether side was impossible; therefore the focal purpose is to teach students, parents, professors, or community residents about fraternities. The absence of a possible resolution leaves a window for any reader’s interpretation.

The Greek communities that have risen across the country have created huge impacts on every university that they have established themselves on. Historically, fraternities were designed for students to discreetly meet to discuss issues and host debates that their members believed would be deemed inappropriate by their collegiate faculties. Since their founding, fraternities and sororities have completely revamped their focuses. They are used as social, professional, and honorary organizations that promote many different combinations of community service, leadership, and academic success. Sororities and fraternities are becoming more influential on college campuses and among the professional world. Over 730 schools across the United States have the Greek life system and there are several different fraternities and sororities on each college campus. Many Americans have extremely different opinions about Greek life as a whole. Although many say it is all about partying, there are many pros and cons to joining Greek life. Greek life can be a very good experience in college, it is whatever people make it.

When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.

The total population of students in University of Miami is 10,615 undergraduate students, with a diversity of 55% (https://welcome.miami.edu/about-um/fast-facts/student-enrollment/index.html). 2,500 students are a part of Greek with 29 Greek Letter Organization (http://doso.studentaffairs.miami.edu/units/greek-life/index.html). There are nine sororities at University of Miami, which potential new member can rush sororities starting in spring of first year (http://doso.studentaffairs.miami.edu/units/greek-life/councils-chapters/index.html). Sororities are commonly known as a college social club or organization for women, with particular distinction given to the African American sororities. It has been 239 years since the first fraternity was established and now in 2015, there are 123 fraternities and sororities. Target Audience In this memo, I will discuss the stereotypes of sorority girls do to the public and media. Also, I will discuss what sorority girls believe in and what they do in their chapters. I created a Sororities Life PSA to target market girls who are afraid of joining a sorority because of false accusations they hear and see about Greek life. I chose this PSA because I was one of those girls who were afraid of joining a sorority because of all the negative effects it had.

Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Greek life plays a major role in colleges and universities all across the United States. Greek life allows men and women to join an organization and create a long lasting bond, as brothers or sisters, which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. College campuses explore and boast about the positive impacts that Greek life has on students as well as the community around them. However, even with fraternities and sororities being on college campuses for decades, few people outside the Greek life community have discovered the real, enduring process that it takes to become a "brother" or "sister". What previous knowledge I had about sororities was based of the experience of my older sister, who went through the recruitment process twice to find her home in Kappa Delta at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The advice my sister gave was each school is different when it came to Greek life, but the experience would be the same it would leave me experiencing so many different feelings from exhaustion to painfully awkward conversations. I wanted to see for myself if this process was for me, to see if I could see myself as being a “sorority girl.”

When undergraduates become interested in Greek life, they have to decide if the advantages outweigh the risks. In the news, the public hears the negative side of Greek life such as the students in sororities and fraternities passing away from alcohol abuse, or colleges such as Indiana University suspending fraternities on campus for hazing and alcohol violations until March 2018. While many negative topics about Greek life are prominent in the news, not all sororities and fraternities experience hazing and illegal problems. Although both advantages and disadvantages arise on college campuses within Greek life, undergraduate students usually benefit from being a part of a sorority or fraternity and are able to create a healthy environment and community to learn, work, and live in.

Recently, the idea of partaking in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are captivated with wanting to live the Greek life. The clothes and parties seem to drawn in teens like a magnet. However what these teens do not realize is the terrible things associated with fraternities. Many fraternities have a reputation for turning college students into drunks, treating women vulgarly, enacting violent hazing against other fraternity members and disrupting the true reason why students go to college. For these reasons fraternities should be banned altogether on college campuses.
