Target Audience In this memo, I will discuss the stereotypes of sorority girls do to the public and media. Also, I will discuss what sorority girls believe in and what they do in their chapters. I created a Sororities Life PSA to target market girls who are afraid of joining a sorority because of false accusations they hear and see about Greek life. I chose this PSA because I was one of those girls who were afraid of joining a sorority because of all the negative effects it had. Stereotypes vs. Reality This PSA was to stop people from judging girls who are in sororities. To this day, we have professors, students, and many others who believe that we Greeks are up to no good, party all the time, don’t take school seriously and think we are better than everyone else. Right below I will talk about important viewpoints the PSA video had. • The images I chose were pictures I found online under sorority girl stereotypes. These images represented the negative effect sorority girls are believed to have. The first song played was Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado, which was one of the negative stereotypes sorority girls are known for. Many believe that life of a sorority …show more content…
Sorority girls aren’t all about the parties, the pictures and how good we look. Each sorority has its own values they follow. We all believe in sisterhood, philanthropies, social networking, community services, and opportunities. In philanthropies, we spend time sharing awareness and raising money for a good cause. Doing community service is voluntary work to help out our community. A sisterhood is to have a closer bond with your sorority sisters. Social networking is being able to contact alumnae and asking them if they can help you with an internship at their office. Opportunity is making the best being in your sorority and holding a position in
With this research I plan to go back to the roots of why sororities use Greek language in their discourse community and how it helps them form a sisterhood that is shared only amongst the community. Sororities and fraternities are becoming more prevalent in universities all across the nation. Today, there are over 9 million members of the Greek communities and the number is continuously growing each year (“Greek Life Statistics”). “The terms ‘fraternity’ and ‘sorority’ describe groups of men and women who join together to offer fellowship, academic support, leadership training, participation in campus activities, service to the community and University, and preparation for future careers” (“What is Greek Life?”). People that in are the Greek community all have at least one thing in common. Whether they just want to be apart of a sisterhood/brotherhood or deeper things like they all share a common belief or goal. “Sororities have five basic benefits: sisterhood, scholarship, leadership, philanthropy (charitable causes/community service), and socializing” (“About Sororities”). These benefits are included in the values and beliefs of a sorority as a discourse community. Greeks all speak a “language” that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority(recruitment process). Agendas, e-mails, and text messages are all forms of a genre. A genre is anything that is written down and shared in the discourse community. Face to face interaction is a way to advertise for events and also another way to advertise for events is through
One of the biggest stereotypes about being in a fraternity or sorority is that you party and drink a lot. Drinking alcohol is not a focal point of Greek life, although alcohol is at almost every social occasion in Greek life. In Blake’s article it is said that no matter what Greek organization you are a part of underage
The varying reactions of sorority girls in different settings will likely yield several different forms of measurements, and while wide-ranging field notes and descriptions will be a useful part of the data there will also be an attempt to make certain measurements of more quantitative data to serve for direct and concrete analysis across a variety of factors. Behaviors and behavior rates exhibited by individual sorority girls or "sisters," specific behavior types or rates seen more prominently in specific sororities, changes in behavior from situation to situation (again tracked by specific individuals, by specific sorority affiliation, and in the study population as a whole), and types of behavior that are specific to certain scenarios will all be observed and measured in addition to the more general qualitative descriptions that the data collection methods will produce and from which other results can be assessed. Through these measurements, an appropriate and fair assessment of sorority girls' behavior in a variety of situations and across several factors can be assessed and analyzed in a mathematical fashion rather than simply through qualitative description, adding validity to the research.
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
I believe the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to grow and develop women scholastically and to help women reach their goals. This organization is noted for its extensive service, reaching beyond college campuses. The purpose is also to stay dedicated and committed to academic excellence. Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., not only give back to their community but are also leaders, uniting women to have a positive impact on others. Joining a sisterhood such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is a lifelong commitment. Since Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. starts in the collegiate years, the skills you learn can help later on in life. It is also preparation for working with people with different personal and professional backgrounds. Also, to be aware of what is going on around you and how you can make an impact. Young women looking for mentorship can have a positive
Between family legacies, traditions, and an abundance of college themed movies, books, and television shows, it would be difficult to find a prospective college student who is not familiar with the idea of “Greek life.” For the purpose of this essay, “Greek life” refers to the system employed by many colleges and universities to establish and maintain fraternities and sororities (primarily dominated by caucasian and economically advantages students). It is important to note the existence of fraternities and organizations outside of this stereotypical “Greek” realm, such as coeducational honor and service based fraternities, though even these are not fully exempt from detrimental practices. Fraternities and sororities are often looked down upon with a negative light for a number of reasons, some of which include dangerous hazing habits and unsavory social scenes. While there certainly are undeniable benefits and negatives within these systems, the biggest effect they have is on gender. “Greek life” in college is unhealthy due to its impact on post-college gender expectations by promoting party culture, encouraging misogyny through ingrained tradition, and indoctrinating women into subservience at an impressionable age.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
Greek Life, also know as Sorority and Fraternity Life, is perceived to have a bad reputation. Sororities and Fraternities are often judged by the stereotypes that many people perceive from movies and television shows. They are usually portrayed as rich, snobby kids who only care about partying. Some people even go as far to say that its just paying for your friends. Many think Sororities and Fraternities should be banned from colleges because they believe it encourages hazing, discrimination, and partying.
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.
However, if you are looking to be more connected on your college campus and to automatically belong to a sense of community, joining a sorority is the perfect fit for you. Delta Gamma claims its mission is to “foster ideals of friendship among women”, and it is fairly clear through the public discourse, as well as the discourse meant specifically for Delta Gamma’s, that community and friendship is something that is cherished within the organization. Joining a sorority means that you are a part of traditions that have been around for decades, thus being connected to something bigger than yourself. A sorority isn’t just something you do for your four years in college, but it is something that you use as a networking tool and a bond of friendship for as long as you live. It also means having a forever snow cone run partner, new opportunities to plug yourself into, and girls who are always there to comment how good you look on your Instagram photos. Those these things may seem infantile, they are super important and go a long way in making you feel like you are at home at your university, and that is the exact goal of any sorority. If any of this sounds appealing to you, there should be no hesitation in
Over several decades, Greek life has been an integral part of colleges and universities throughout the United States. There is a high demand of “fitting in” in today’s society and a question that students, parents, and teachers alike often ask themselves is, “Does Greek life provide a more safe or harmful environment?” With strong evidence, it is absolutely absurd to believe that fraternities and sororities do more good than they do harm. Various statistics provide factual evidence as to why Greek life is a toxic and dangerous environment for many young adults. Between the rape culture, hazing, and delinquency linked to the students associated with Greek life, it is time that it comes to an end for good so that students may have a more safe and enjoyable college experience. Fraternities and Sororities should be banned off of college and university campuses due to the danger and drama associated with them.
Sororities encourage one to become involved in the community, develop leadership skills and pursue lifetime goals with passion. The sisterhood that sorority members experience helps females build confidence and lasting friendships that are beneficial throughout their lives. Sorority members are also granted special privileges on and off
The Greek community is a longstanding tradition found at most colleges and universities across the country. Greek Letter fraternities and sororities were designed to instill principles of friendship, loyalty, service, and academic success into their members (Alford, Joe). Over time, many of these values have become more difficult to recognize in chapters across the nation because of multiple incidents involving partying, binge drinking, and especially hazing. These are the issues that have come to define Greek life on campuses in the United States today, and because of that Greek life as a whole has developed a nasty reputation in the eyes of the public. Although these are what most people think about when they imagine a typical fraternity or sorority, it is not the way these once great institutions were designed to be. The Greek community needs to do a better job of working together to prove to their campuses, and to the nation, that they are about much more than the issues that surround them. A major reform is in order to help the Greek system return to the values that they were founded upon, so that they can continue to be an important part of millions of young adult’s college experiences.
As fall approaches, students all around the world begin a new school year. For some it’s elementary and middle school and for others it’s high school or college. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of college is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek-letter organization attend functions to learn more about the various fraternities and sororities on campus. After the various functions, the different houses and chapters decide which students they would like to invite to become members. The negative aspects of Greek life is no secret to the American public simply because that’s what the media reports. There is an underlying reason that people continue to be a part of Greek life, and it isn’t only
Fraternity and sorority organizations have been established on the basis of brother/sisterhood and the well-being of the college and community. But over the past couple of decades frats and sororities have dimmed the lights that shine on their positive activity and have intensified the speculation of the negative activities that go on behind closed doors. Because of hazing, its effects, and consequences , we have come to a point where these types of organizations should be terminated.
