Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and …show more content…
Statistically, if it happened in my parent’s life then it is supposedly destined to happen to me. A drug addict, a single-parent, African American female with no High School diploma, and working an industrial job is where many individuals pictured me based on statics corresponding my parent’s life. Instead I obtained my High School diploma, worked at Sonic (a restaurant that strives on their employee’s academic excellence) for three years; I’m a junior in college that has thrived academically and socially over my years. From high school to college I maintained a 3.5 GPA. Excelling academically led me to growing socially by joining different clubs throughout those years. In high school I was in Junior Civitan Club, an Auxillary Junior Volunteer, a Medical Explorer, and was invited to join an honors mathematics club named MU ALPHA THETA. During my attendance at the University of South Carolina-Sumter (USC Sumter), I joined the Outstanding Scholars Program. At the University of South Carolina-Aiken (USC Aiken), I became a member of the cross country team, Student Athletic Booster Club, and Pacer Service Society. Through my academic years I did not let any of those statistics discourage me from proceeding to educate myself nor from pursuing Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated. I am serious about being in one of our nation’s most respectable sorority within the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated gives me the opportunity to
Currently I am the first person in my entire family to attend a 4-year university, and I have plans to go to grad school. I personally strive for excellence and take pride in everything that I do from my grades, to my community involvement, and my campus involvement just to name a few. I feel as if Alpha Phi Alpha also takes pride in all of those things as well. This being my second year here at the university I have gotten a chance to see close up a view of how the Kappa Alpha chapter actively engages with the campus and the community. While viewing the KA chapter I had also gotten a chance to see all of the other organizations and they did not quite seem to embody the values and traits that Alpha Phi Alpha upholds. My very first semester I had a chance to attend bible study here on campus, which was held and taught by two KA brothers and I was impressed with how knowledgeable and passionate they

I knew going into college that I wanted to join a sorority. I was a legacy and felt the need to carry on that legacy. However, what ended up happening was not what I had in mind. Instead, I created my own legacy by joining a different sorority than those of my family members. But what I came to find was that the chapter that I chose was full of girls who cared about their friends and sisters. I stayed because I too cared about the other members who are a part of the same sisterhood.
On Wednesday's class there were different students representing clubs and organizations at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The students who represented FAMU Connections talked how their organization recruit students through song and dance. The Greek student talked about the pros and cons of joining sorority and fraternity. When a person joins a sorority or fraternity he or she expands their social circle. They are also up for different leadership opportunities, a brotherhood/sisterhood, and also networking with older members or younger members. The cons that the members expressed to us was that time management skills was necessary, that you are at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University for school first. And also keeping
The three main reasons I am excited to join a sorority include my personal development, loyalty and friendship, and support of my aspirations. As a sister, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal development. I am confident that my experience and communication skills will be enriched by the activities that I participate in, the responsibility I take, and the people I meet. I am looking forward to making friends for life. I think that the atmosphere and set up of a sorority fosters and encourages the development of lifelong friendships through common aims and shared experiences. I also believe that sorority life emphasizes and encourages loyalty to and among the sisterhood, my school and the nation. Support from my sisters
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated have made everlasting effects on my life. Having mentors in this fraternity allowed me to see how every member feels responsible for improving the communities that they are from. They never hesitate to take the leadership roles that are needed to see change. I would like to become a member of Alpha Phi Alpha because it would allow us to share a brotherhood with great men, it will allow me to make valuable connections with other positive men around the world, and it will help me become the best version of myself. My desire to become a member of this fraternity began my freshmen year after I attended the first informational meeting. At this meeting I was able to speak with members and also learn from them. They each have strong leadership characteristics that allow them to serve on executive boards across campus and they all are high achieving students at Cornell.
One of Sigma’s values is upholding standards and producing women of character. When seeking out potential new members we do not base our selections on looks and appearance, we consider character, leadership qualities, academics, and ethical conduct. “Sigma Sigma Sigma reaffirms its long standing core values of wisdom, power, faith, hope and love” (Tri Sigma Today). Once initiated, or formally inducted, we strive to uphold these standards as sisters. In general, the required GPA to pledge a Greek organization is 2.0, but we hold ours to a firm 2.5 GPA. Sisters already initiated are expected to maintain this
Going into college, I knew that I wanted to join a fraternity, but I was not thoroughly sure which one to choose or which ones stood for what. During the organization fair, the President of Sigma Phi Epsilon showcased his fraternity with all of his statistics about his brothers. They have had the highest G.P.A. four semesters in a row, Chapter of the Year for two consecutive years, and the aspect of Sigma Phi Epsilon that caught my attention was their intramural success- softball in particular. Holding that championship title, I knew at this point that Sigma Phi Epsilon was the right fraternity. The day that I signed my bid was an eventful day for me. Sigma Phi Epsilon continued to impress me at the first official meeting in Claypool-Young
I believe that I posses the level of ethical standards and integrity and dedication to sisterhood and love for service, required to uphold the reputation of Alpha Kappa Alpha. These characteristics are expressed in my actions and the strives I make to and improve my character daily through what I call “small victories”: small things that can be done to better myself and others daily. These are achieved through academic integrity and doing my part, to volunteer, mentor and help people any time presented the opportunity. My dedication to sisterhood in my opinion is rarely matched and is one I have been nurturing for years, starting as a Girl Scout, continuing to Girls In The Game program and most recently apart of a Sisters Inc, a mentoring/leadership program that I’ve had the pleasure to be involved with in for over six years and have been involved with on numerous levels; mentee, mentor, ambassador and alumni commitee. I’ve been afforded the opportunity to make life long friends, mentor girls, build self esteem and develop in my journey to being an all around model citizen. All of these programs not only showed me the importance of sisterhood but also scholarship and service, showing me that a real sister are those that will help you and will except your help back. A real sister is one who you never have to sacrifice your love of service you’re your dedication to scholarship for and lastly love you like blood. Lastly I believe that my love of service is characteristic I believe that I can use to maintain the status of Alpha Kappa Alpha, from a young age my grandmother would preach to me “do unto others…”. From a young I knew it was my responsibility to assist someone in need any chance I am given. And have carried this belief to every organization I have joined for the Girl Scouts of America to my recent membership into the Student Activity
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.
Coming into my freshman year of college, I knew that I wanted to get involved around campus. I decided to join a sorority so I can get to know more people. First coming in, I just wanted to be a part of something. I had no idea that one day I would be on council as a vice president for an organization of over 300 people. It started with just one decision to apply for an appointed officer position. I applied for the role of chaplain for the entire sorority. As a freshman, I knew that I was not likely to get the position because they probably wanted older girls with more experience. However, the spring of that year I was chosen from many applicants to be the Chaplain for a large organization. I was very intimidated about being seen as a leader
Sorors, please accept my strong support for the application of Ms. LaMara T. Russell. She is a Senior Financial Analyst for the Executive Transport Program at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation and currently resides in Wallingford, CT. I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing LaMara since her birth in 1983. Her mother and I are childhood friends. She is energetic and an extremely competent young lady of great vision, depth, humor, and dedication. I believe that her membership would greatly enhance our sorority. LaMara has been very active in the community beginning with the Greater New Haven NAACP Youth Council in 1990. She served as the Youth Council President and the Treasurer of the Connecticut State Youth & College Division. In addition
I am a second- semester junior Business-Marketing and I excel in and out of the academic setting..As a mother, and preacher’s wife, I know very well the significance and strength of a woman and the moral responsibilities that come with being a christian African- American woman. Being able to serve mankind with the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha would be beneficial for me and the many people who are surrounded by me. If sponsored to be a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha, I can continue to be even more influential for the people I serve at College Hill Missionary Baptist Church where I am a Sunday School teacher, the Temporary Emergency Service in Tuscaloosa, the Stillman College Choir and the many relatives in my family who never had the chance
I am happy to help a teammate learn more about sorority or fraternity life before sending their kids off to school this fall. There are 25 university pennants I collected over the year that hang at my desk. Whenever someone sees their school, I use that as a moment to create a positive relationship and tell them that I too have enjoyed the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens or Oregon sunsets. I am cultured through travel and have learned everything from how to peel a craw fish to the history of the Harvard Yard. I learned to work hard and long, to run on fumes, to keep moving and to find inner motivation. I don’t need hand-holding. Kappa has prepared me to work unsupervised and to problem solve on my own. I learned to be independent, but also to make friends
