Personal Narrative: Sorority Recruitment

As a freshman at UNCW, I was starting out in a new place for the very first time, away from my friends and family. So many different thoughts were running through my mind like “How do I make friends.” Maybe I could join different clubs and organizations around campus. I found myself wanting sign up for sorority recruitment, to see what Greek life was about here at UNCW. What previous knowledge I had about sororities was based of the experience of my older sister, who went through the recruitment process twice to find her home in Kappa Delta at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The advice my sister gave was each school is different when it came to Greek life, but the experience would be the same it would leave me experiencing so many different feelings from exhaustion to painfully awkward conversations. I wanted to see for myself if this process was for me, to see if I could see myself as being a “sorority girl.” Sorority recruitment is a timely process, you basically have to dedicate on average four to five hours talking to a bunch of girls about who may have nothing in common with. You have to engage in some “pointless conversations”. However, that isn’t how this whole thing works, the day before my orientation for recruitment I received an email from my Gamma Chi telling us what we should wear for the five different days. I felt this constant pressure of having to look my absolute best, just so I wouldn’t feel like I was being judged. No amount of makeup or clothing could make that feeling disappear.
