As a freshman at UNCW, I was starting out in a new place for the very first time, away from my friends and family. So many different thoughts were running through my mind like “How do I make friends.” Maybe I could join different clubs and organizations around campus. I found myself wanting sign up for sorority recruitment, to see what Greek life was about here at UNCW. What previous knowledge I had about sororities was based of the experience of my older sister, who went through the recruitment process twice to find her home in Kappa Delta at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. The advice my sister gave was each school is different when it came to Greek life, but the experience would be the same it would leave me experiencing so many different feelings from exhaustion to painfully awkward conversations. I wanted to see for myself if this process was for me, to see if I could see myself as being a “sorority girl.” Sorority recruitment is a timely process, you basically have to dedicate on average four to five hours talking to a bunch of girls about who may have nothing in common with. You have to engage in some “pointless conversations”. It’s kind of crazy to think about how some girls go through such great extent, just to guarantee that they are selected into the sorority of their …show more content…
However, that isn’t how this whole thing works, the day before my orientation for recruitment I received an email from my Gamma Chi telling us what we should wear for the five different days. I felt this constant pressure of having to look my absolute best, just so I wouldn’t feel like I was being judged. No amount of makeup or clothing could make that feeling disappear. No matter what anyone said to all 400 of us were feeling judged not just from the different sorority members, but from each
She was interested in joining Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated because she wanted share the experience of having sisterhood on campus who valued the same things she
As I started Bloomfield College I have always been interest in joining a sorority. I went to many different interested meeting and none of them caught my attention like Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. did. When I sat down and listen to their history and their goals it really made me change my mind and realize that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. was the one. I am a proud Latina and to know that they were the first sorority ever created to cater towards the needs of Latinas in the nation made me more excited and enthusiastic on being part of the interested ladies. The main thing that captured my interest was to know that Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. is a scholarly excellence sorority. As any person would think a sorority is about partying and having fun I believe this one focus more on their educational future and to achieve their goals.
The first club that I checked out was a sorority called Sigma Lambda Gamma. The girl who was running the table for Sigma Lambda Gamma went to my high school three years ago. I’ve never really interested in sorority life not because of
The three main reasons I am excited to join a sorority include my personal development, loyalty and friendship, and support of my aspirations. As a sister, there is an expectation of social interaction and personal development. I am confident that my experience and communication skills will be enriched by the activities that I participate in, the responsibility I take, and the people I meet. I am looking forward to making friends for life. I think that the atmosphere and set up of a sorority fosters and encourages the development of lifelong friendships through common aims and shared experiences. I also believe that sorority life emphasizes and encourages loyalty to and among the sisterhood, my school and the nation. Support from my sisters
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
Chanting and screaming of sorority houses at Library Lawn, as new members take off running from all different directions to their new homes. If you stopped and took it all in, you could see all thirteen houses standing out around a stage in different themes, waiting for the new pledges. After months of preparation of recommendation letters, resumes and shopping for the perfect outfit to wear to each house event during recruitment, Bid Day was finally here. Today was the day that over 700 girls would run to their new home for the next four years and make bonds and friendships that would last a lifetime.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
As the spring semester quickly approaches, many of us have one thing on our mind: formal sorority recruitment. While the overall idea of wearing high heels and small talking for an entire day can seem intimidating, here are some tips and tricks to make this week worth it.
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.
I have been reflecting this week what being a part of a sorority means to me, which got me interested in find sources based on the negative aspects of greek life. The first source comes from the political cartoon genre that was written by a student and published in their university’s newspaper. The cartoon has the caption “Deciphering Rush Week Slogans” and depicts a young female student walking through a lawn filled with recruitment signs. The other source is a blog post from HerCampus titled “7 Things Sorority Girls Won’t Tell You About Being in a Sorority”. This article goes through a list of things that members will not discuss with the younger girls during recruitment which includes things such as you wont be best friends with everyone
Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after “drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop” (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes a dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse are some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority. According to Kevin Brown, “you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything.” Some sororities “will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. They will force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they’re given five minutes to examine each other’s chests and rank themselves by size” (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Clearly, fraternities and sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well-being of their potential members.
Can Greek Life Organizations, on college campuses, have a positive impact on the young students? If so, how? I plan on focusing on the positive outcomes of being in a Greek Letter Organization. Greek life is always blown up in the media as being an awful influence on college students. This paper will bring together all the positive sides of being in a fraternity or sorority instead of the negative ones. Some of the positive outcomes of being in a greek organization are the networking opportunities, job possibilities, and the personality you build while being in a fraternity or sorority. My sources will be coming from the internet, magazines, and interviews. I am interested in this topic because I am in a sorority on campus at George Mason University.
Right around now is the start of the academic year at American universities. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students who wish to join a Greek-letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities and sororities decide which students they would like to invite to become members.
Furthermore, fraternities are infamous for their requirement to pledge in order to join the brotherhood. Although the specific acts inflicted on pledges is known only by members of fraternity, it is commonly known that hazing is part of the initiation. The pledges have to complete a series of humiliating and sometime dangerous rituals in order to join. They could be forced to consume excessive amount of alcohols and drugs, or be physically beaten or be publicly humiliated. Little known fact, white fraternities generally use alcohol for hazing while black fraternities result to physical violence. In a survey conducted by Dr. Susan Lipkins “31% of Fraternity and sorority members agree that a significant element in an initiation rite is humiliation.” “Also, many of the Greek Leaders agree that
One thing I’ve had my mind set on doing since I was a junior in high school was rushing a fraternity in college. I made my mind up after hearing stories from my friends’ older brothers and teachers that experienced greek life. Not only did they provide them with a close-knit brotherhood in college, which can be a hard thing to find if you are coming to a school out of state, but they also provide an active social life, leadership opportunities, and business connections for later in life. The key, I’ve been told, is finding the fraternity that you fit in the best and that feels like home. If you plan to spend the next four years with a close group of guys every day it’s imperative that you find an organization you believe you belong in.
