There have been many phenomena introduced to man within the twentieth century. The most important and interesting of these phenomena is the existential vacuum. In the 1960s, Viktor Frankl observed that people twentieth century have lost meaning of purpose. He also observed that the existential vacuum was worse in the United States than in Europe or developing countries. A potential cause for this feeling of emptiness is the loss of animal instinct throughout human history. Every living culture, whether it was human or animal has an innate set of instincts that guide how we live. However, through time, humans have tamed those instincts and shoved them into non-existence by creating laws of “civility.” For example, people used to …show more content…
Yes, we still eat meat, but the connection of what it means for one life (the cow, for example), to give up that life so that another (the human) may live, is lost. Where once people had respect for the food they ate and understood the life sustenance that made food so important, now it means nothing. There is no understanding to how food reacts with our bodies. The only understanding is that when you feel hunger, you want to eat. And food is readily available, so it is no big deal. Likewise, the connection to clothes has become how they make you look when wearing them, rather than the appreciation of how they are made. Humans used to be awed by something so simple as the sun rising every day, after disappearing the night before. Storms were something to be feared. A successful hunt was something to show appreciation for, as was a successful harvest. People developed religion to worship the aforementioned gods and/or the Supreme Being. The expression of faith was an integral part of society. However, again mostly in the last century, even faith has been eroding. Scientists have explained how storms happen and how the sun rises and sets. Many people find nothing to be awed at anymore and we definitely do not have ceremonies to honor the harvest or the hunt. Well, at least not in their original form, and this paper is not the forum to explain certain cultural calendars. People may go to church, synagogue, or other houses of worship, but the
CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE 1. Before the 1980's, China was facing a very serious issue. China had an uncontrolled population which was leading to minimal resources, overpopulation, minimal education, minimal healthcare, and many other issues. As a result of this issue, China implemented a one-child policy in the year of 1980.
In the past, many great civilizations were heavily influenced by religion. Their religious beliefs inspired and shaped their art, culture, architecture, and technology, and helped drive their progress forward.
Religious behaviors developed to what they are today beginning in the pre-historic times of the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and the Neolithic. There is evidence of these behaviors in the archaeological artifacts as well as mythological evidence. Religious behaviors evolved as humans evolved.
The idea of abstaining from meat has been around for a long period of time. According to Claus Leitzmann from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition it has been around since the sixth century B.C. and originated from the Orphic mysteries followers. A greek philosopher by the name of Pythagorean, and other influential persons promoted ethical vegetarianism until the 19th century. After that it begin to fade away until it was reintroduced during the Renaissance Era and the Age of Enlightenment. When people were informed of the benefits of becoming a vegetarian or vegan, a person that does not consume or use
Since the beginning, people have created calendars for order and to value life. Calendars have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence. They have evolved from picking up more information from other ideas and ancient cultures. These include the Egyptian calendar, the Gregorian calendar (the one we use today) and the Mayan calendar. Historically, the creation of a calendar that provides both a satisfactory representation of time and practical value for the ordering of life has proved a vexing problem.
Since the dawn of time, people have necessitated explanations for various natural phenomena, such as rain, earthquakes, and death as well as human characteristics of love, wisdom, and anger. Societies, thus, began to formulate unique beliefs of deities with great power that explained any unknown territories. They worshiped these divine beings trusting in their abilities and fearing their fury. However, no two cultures ever had the same beliefs; each system of belief - each mythology - was designed to reflect the individual societies, who practiced it.
The issue of the emergence of religion is a very tense issue. The very nature of what constitutes a religion is undefined. Furthermore, archeological evidence alone doesn’t give full insights into religious practices.
Religion gave birth to community and belonging. It provided meaning to early settlers and gave them hierarchies. Religion and rituals of the past improved burial techniques, in doing so they gave the dead more respect, instead of just digging a hole they would hold a ceremony to honour the deceased. Today even, the ethics and moral based around Jesus’s teaching and the Ten Commandments are common practice in most societies. Teachings learnt from previous religious experiences have influenced western culture and continue to be the base for moral codes and laws. Scientific endeavour was a part of a few religions. Islam and Greek religions enforced science and philosophy and did not dispute its facts like the Catholic Church did with Galileo in 1616, refuting his ideas and stopping his
Meat is part of a balanced diet. If humans stopped breeding animals for meat, then we would have to hunt all the wild animals for food. The wild animals will be hunted into extinction because of gluttonous meat-eaters. Because of factory farming, meat is now available at all time at the super market. This makes meat convenient to obtain and eat nutritionally. Meat contains all the essential amino acids that we need every day to remain as healthy individuals. Minerals and vitamins that are also beneficial to the growth and development of the human body are found in meat too. Eating specific types of meat such as fish provides healthy natural oils that cannot be found anywhere else. Abandoning meat as a source of nutrition means we will need to compensate with another source of sustenance.
They used clay tablets to make drawings and keep records. Writing influenced many artists to create religious monumental art and structures that are important figures in the world today. Without this artwork, such as cave drawings and stories written on tablets, we wouldn't know what humans were capable of thousands of years ago. Lastly, an organized religion is the foundation for a society. Religion is something that a society must have to be classified as civilized. Gods and goddesses were the main focus of living and worshipped daily. Since helping fellow citizens is important in a civilization, religion is valuable because it teaches people to give back and help peers in need, rather than just care about themselves. A society needs religion because it gives people something good to believe in and have hope about. The reason we practice religion is that humans are looking for the meaning of
Rewind back to the early ancient history, religion is one the first concept that human acknowledged. From the beginning religion was based on nature. Deities was all related with natural phenomenons. For example the God of rain, the Mother of earth, or the God of the sun. The need of religion back then was very simple. They have problems and religion was invented to solve what they asked for. If there is drought, they would ask the deity for water and rains. As the agriculture has developed, the need of religion has increased. People had power and wanted to control it, so they used religion as a powerful tool to convince people. For example the relationship between churches and the British government in early centuries. The church used to have power to decide almost every political move, like execution. Religion in many other countries also have been used to control people like in England, so there were many people from lower levels felt obstructive and they needed freedom. America was the place for them to come to get their freedom, so it created diversity in religion of America.
Early belief systems created a bond between people that led to communal rituals and ceremonies. People formed communities with their shared beliefs in deities. In simple words, early belief systems
The belief in Gods has always existed throughout human’s recored history. Whether it be the Greek Gods: Apollo, and Zeus, or the Judeo-Christian God, believed by Christians in modern day society. The belief of God has always existed among humans, however, assuming God does not exist, what explains the cultural evolution of such a false belief, namely religion? I shall argue that the reason this false belief is successful is because it manipulates human nature better than any other belief by these three points: an avoidance of death (the soul), a sense of worth (knowledge), and a sense, or need of belief (faith).
The origins of religion as Brodie mentioned make sense to primitive beings with no understanding of what is beyond themselves, it is true that they were driven by the will to survive and multiply, but eventually our frontal lobes evolved to the point where we could question something instead of just doing it or ignoring it. A god seems
There are hundreds of alternating stories about the creation of the universe, religion, and morals among the thousands of faith groups around the world. These religions/views and the beginning of religion itself similarly originate alongside the birth of men. The beginnings of religion may have preceded the primary member of our species, Homo sapiens. Many scientists believe the concept that our pre-human ancestors went through a number of changes as they transitioned from “pre-human” to fully human. First, they attained a fully developed self-consciousness and a moral sense, then they developed a spirit of community that was much more advanced than any other species, and finally they constructed methods of precise communication becoming aware of their finite personal life and own impending death. Neanderthals reverently buried their dead with a ritual that seems to show that they anticipated life after death, in some form. They oriented the bodies in a specific direction, they planted tools with the body that might be of use in a future life. Neanderthals might have had based this belief on some concept of the supernatural that was just, in fact, common natural occurrences. From the moment humans have attained a sense of finite existence they have attempted to give meaning to life. Humans have created gods to explain scientific phenomenons, rituals to bring good fortune, and burials to ease death. History has proven that with the changing of society, God or gods change as
