The Greeks were before the Romans. The Romans stole most Greek beliefs. Both truly believed the Earth had a soul. Both took part in sacrifices and rituals to please the Gods. Its purpose is, to say that, even though it is highly debatable whether religions are false or true, most of them serve a very basic purpose of establishing morals and values.
