The four pillars of National Honor Society (NHS) include scholarship, service, leadership, and character. I have already received this application opportunity due to meeting the requirements of the scholarship portion of NHS, which requires a strong commitment to learning and putting effort towards achieving high grades in the classroom. I intend to benefit the remaining three pillars of service, leadership, and character through my willingness to work for others free of reward, initiative to lead my peers, and optimal decision making. Perhaps the most rewarding of the four pillars is service because of the effect it can have on communities. Service is the act of doing work for someone or for a certain cause, but also doing this solely for the benefit of the people around you. I feel that I can benefit the NHS organization because of my willingness to help others. In the past, I have gone on a missions trip for my church which involved helping to rebuild the homes and churches in the inner-city of Cincinnati and taking part in the effort to bring joy to the youth of that community. Being a leader is being a role model and striving to make a positive impact on those around you. In order to be a successful leader, you have to put yourself second and your peers first. For example, my younger sister and I both play softball. I have played on several travel teams during the summer and this year, she tried out for her first competitive travel team.
