Being an American has many meanings, both positive and negative. Some of the better qualities of being an American include, being free and fortunate enough to have a government that is supposed to look out for the peace, safety, and enjoyment of life for every individual. Being an American is advantageous, because more times than not, we have a society that is willing to help those less fortunate. Being an American means that we can essentially communicate with various cultures and begin to learn different walks of life. We are given the constitutional right to worship religious views if we choose, without fear of persecution. Congress essentially represents their biggest funders, not their actual constituents, and laws to benefit those funders who have rigged the system against the mass of the people, to the point that voter apathy has finished off the appearance of democracy. When the supreme law of the land unequivocally puts big money at the heart of political campaigns, there becomes very little hope for change at the individual level. One of the changes that may be beneficial in American government, would be reviving all major decisions by Citizens assembly, including the ability to overturn laws or regulations with, say, an eighty percent supermajority or for reconsideration with a simple majority. After reading the Federalist papers, it becomes clear that this is clearly not what the founders intended. They wanted a house that was highly democratic and representative, checked and balanced, by genuinely republican institutions in the senate, presidency, and judiciary.
