To many people being an American means different things. To some it means being able to watch football on Sundays and eat hamburgers. To others it means having the choice of what to wear or how to act, but for me being an American means so much more. In my opinion being American is about having freedom and the opportunity to be yourself. Americans are a diverse community of people who are part of the democracy created by our founding fathers. This democracy protects our freedoms and rights to be our own individuals. Unlike in many other countries, we have the power to choose different pathways which help lead us towards where we want to head in our lives. For example, the choice of school or profession. Being part of a democracy also means that you have the chance to contribute. We are given the power to vote for our president and many other important positions in the government. This gives us a voice. In many …show more content…
We have the power to say things, even if it goes against other people’s views on the subject. This freedom not only comes with great power, but also with great responsibility. This shows that in America we have the ability to trust one another and to not be judgmental or rude about other’s opinions. Our differences and views on certain topics also make us stronger as a union. The freedom to challenge other opinions shows the diversity of the people and our nation. It also demonstrates that people are allowed to believe in what they want without having to worry about getting in trouble. This is not the case in many other countries. Along with freedom of speech also comes freedom of religion. In America we all have the choice of choosing what religion to practice or not practice. This is a very important aspect of being an American. In many countries, you are told what religion to follow or you get in trouble for practicing a different
Freedom of religion and freedom of Speech were some of the major values that drove the pilgrims to start their own community in America. We started in thirteen colonies which have evolved into the fifty states that are our country today. Our newly established democracy offered rights that our old society didn?t bring to the table. Currently, the United States is the most or one of the most privileged nations and is very pleasant to live in compared to some foreign nations that may come to mind. However, we, as citizens, have come to abuse our rights and privileges given to us.
What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.
To be an American means to have freedom. The freedom to do anything the American mind wants without being told it is wrong. To be an American means to live in the greatest country on this blue earth. Without a doubt the best.
Many people dream about being an American. They dream because they envision America as the land of peace and prosperity. But is it? At times it has been, and at times its not. It is hard for the United States to be correct all the time because they have been unwilling designated as the "World Police". Throughout history there have been examples politically, economically, and socially, where being an American is rewarding and times where it is embarrassing. To be an American means progress. We evolved from a world ruled by white men to a world of equal opportunity.

It means you can say “The Pledge of Allegiance.” It means you can have a good education and the job you want. It means to be proud in living in the United States of America. What does it mean to be an american? From the things we did in class and personal experience. I believe being an american means opportunity to do almost anything. I said this because we are the land of the free. But there is some obstacles that we have to deal with that can make it hard to be free.
What does it mean to be an American? When this question comes to mind many people will have different points of view. Many people tend to classify being American as living in the country called North America. Some people think that being American means to be a person living in a free country. Others may also think that it means to be a person living in a free country, but not having everything come free to you. It's call liberty, which means not everything comes free, and not everything you want at any moment of the day can be done or can be given to you.
“America is another name for opportunity. Our whole history appears like a last effort of divine providence on behalf of the human race.” This statement made by Ralph Waldo Emmerson signifies many peoples’ views of what it has meant to be an “American” for the past few hundred years. Still, the world continues to evolve around us, and times continue to change. With these changing times, how one defines what it means to be an American has also evolved. It is no secret that today especially, in our country, times are in turmoil and our country is divided. With this division come differences in how we view each other and ourselves as Americans and what things should look like in our country. Aside from our own views, comes the views of the outside world and their ever-changing views of America, and the citizens living in the country. These things combined work together to help answer the question, “what does it mean to be an American?”
America. The land of the free and the home of the brave. This sentence from the national anthem describes what it means to be an American perfectly. Americans are on a land of freedom that is fought for by bravery. They should show it in how they act every day.
Throughout the life span of the United States, from its infancy after the Revolution to the present, people have asked, “What is an American?” This question goes far beyond asking who is a citizen or who resides in this land. No, it asks what the identity of an American is? Through popular, art, film, and literature, the American image is defined as being based on embracing our individual identities.

This was a bit interesting, because I am from another country and I have been in America for about eight years now. I still do identify with my Ukrainian culture and those roots very much, but I have been in America for long enough to adapt this new culture as well. This assignment really had me thinking about where I identify more, I really never thought about it much before. In my mind I am Ukrainian and I live in America and I am a citizen of U.S., but I feel like I am an American as well. As I think about it more this is how I identify with each culture. I think of myself as a Ukrainian and my roots are from where I was born and lived till I was fourteen. My mind was molded by my Ukrainian family, the way I act, the way I am as an individual is because of how and where I was raised. I still notice myself doing things that I did when I was in Ukraine, or thinking a certain way, as I did when I was in Ukraine. Things that my parents taught me, are still things I do sometimes, my thought process is still centered around those teachings. Mentally I identify with my Ukrainian roots, but the way I live my life now is much Americanized. I do also identify with American culture and I would not change one thing about it. But as a teacher in the future, I know that I will have to explore my American culture and use it in the class more, because a lot of my students will identify with the American culture. I think it is very important to really think about the culture you are in
Today, about thirty-three percent of countries in our world do not have religious freedom. Approximately five and a half billion people are not free to choose their religious opinions . While many countries do not have religious freedom, it is beneficial to analyze the countries that do. The United States of America, Canada, and Latin America have the fewest laws restricting their citizen’s religious beliefs. These countries are often recognized as some of the most civil cultures in our world. This reason for that may be religious freedom. When citizens are able to experience religious freedoms, their minds will be stimulated, their will be less religious persecution, and it strengthens the principles of our world.
