Overall, I feel really sorry for the designer need to accept lots of criticized after the logo release, there are always lots of unpredictable situations will happen during the process of designing a logo, designer should always test out the logo a few more times after they hand to their client and OGC was a great example to draw a lesson for all the contemporary designer. Although I really love the colour that they used and the simplest of only using text on to the logo, but the result of the logo became an ironic joke around the world, it did not improve the image of the department, even destroy the image of it and this kind of mistakes is unacceptable.
In the beginning of the book, Coates, as a little kid and his big brother, Big Bill gets into an alteration with the Murphy Homes (a gang), but Coates is not a fighter; he avoids fights and does not like to feel angry. Coates does not throw one single punch and tries to run away from the fight. Instead, he gets struck by one of them; however, he manages to escape the scene. Using the rhetorical analyisis, Coates used logos and pathos in this scene. Logos is facts and statistics, but also, knowledge or logic.
The speaker used different types of appeals towards his topic. He first used Pathos, by explaining how he was a firefighter and how he wanted to save lives by “slaying dragons”, which means to put out the fire. In his topic he showed how there is a new dragon that he wanted to slay, a dragon that consisted of five different dragons, each head had a disease or illness that is now killing many people. By using this fiction picture and showing his audience how much people are dying because of not living a healthy lifestyle shows the appeal to emotions that the speaker used in his introduction. The appeal to logos, ethos, and pathos are used everyday in many instances. A commercial is just one instance, and Gatorade commercials use them very well. The specific Gatorade commercial I chose to use was the one where Kevin Durant has a nightmare about being blocked by Dwyane Wade that aired in 2013. Kevin Durant doesn’t want that dream to come true so he practices very hard all while using Gatorade products. Meanwhile Dwyane Wade has a nightmare that he gets dunked on by KD, so he decides to use Gatorade products while he practices. The commercial is essentially saying that if you use Gatorade products that you will achieve your goals easier, and be more like the great NBA players that use the products as well.
Rhetoric is the idea of persuasion. Its basic idea is to influence someone to believe in our idea or help understand the message we are trying to deliver. In our daily life we use rhetoric in many places. This includes verbal communication as well as non-verbal communication such as body language and facial expression. In the workplace it can be used to communicate with people effectively.
Modes of persuasion are rhetorical appeals used in writing to persuade an audience (Worthington 58). The rhetoric appeals are divided into three categories; ethos, pathos and logos. Writers and speakers alike must have the ability to use the three appeals within a text to persuade a particular audience. Ethos refers to the author’s or writer’s credibility. The writer or the author has to establish his or her credibility for the audience to consider his or her views. Pathos is appealing through the audience’s emotions. As an author or speaker, it is important to create a certain sense of curiosity and imagination in the audience’s minds in order to have them identify with the speech’s or text sentiments. To justify their opinions, a speaker must use logos, however, pathos and ethos are significantly more influential on how people think. Pathos, the emotional appeal, affects the way people listen to you, and ethos, the ethical appeal, affects what people say is fair. Both of these need word choice and tone to work. An exemplary example of this is a tape made by Chris Voss, an FBI negotiator, where he demonstrates the importance of pathos and ethos.
This article shows great details of how bad writing can be fixed. The article begins by showing logos of what high school and college students are struggling with the most. The reason is that it states key examples of what the students at New Dorp high school aren’t good at. The article shows a lot of opinion from teachers by telling their ways of fixing the students. It is also repetitive by saying that the main reason the kids are not good writers is because they are lazy. In certain ways, this article is using pathos by the teachers. I do think the writer could have used more proven facts.
