Republican Bob McDonnell announced his candidacy for governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia nearly 14 months ago, and today he announced that he would be resigning his post as Attorney General of the Commonwealth as of February 20, 2009. Stepping down from his position as Virginia's Attorney General was a difficult decision, according to McDonnell, and his decision was based partly upon the tradition of former Attorney Generals seeking higher office stepping down to keep the Attorney General's office free from politics. He also noted that campaigning to be Virginia's governor is a full-time job in it of itself. Unlike many politicians nationwide, including Barack Obama and John McCain, who opt to hold onto their political offices until election …show more content…
What are the implications of Cuomo's endorsement, or lack thereof? If Cuomo remains mum, he runs the risk that voters will view him as weak and unable to take a stand. After all, Cuomo has experience and expertise. He knows the candidates for Attorney General better than the average voter. Shouldn't it be incumbent upon him to help his constituents decide upon the important issue of the upcoming Attorney General who will represent them? On the other hand, if Cuomo endorses a candidate, it could have great influence upon the election's outcome for the reasons mentioned above. Also, some voters cast their votes based upon popularity, likability, rather than upon issues. If they like Cuomo, they might vote for the candidate he endorses solely for that reason. According to the NY Daily News article, Cuomo's "nod - particularly if it comes at the eleventh hour - could tip the balance in what is widely expected to be a low-turnout election." Mr. Cuomo, please stay mum. Allow the candidates to represent themselves to the voters. Let them explain their qualifications and stands on issues. Allow the voters to do what it is their responsibility to do - be informed, know who they are voting for, why they are voting, and cast sincere, well-informed votes. This is the American way; this is democracy. For Cuomo to endorse an Attorney General candidate now would be part of the politics-as-usual political game. How can a voter be sure that the reasons Cuomo endorses someone are reasons that matter to him or her? If Cuomo's endorsement attracts voters who do not look into or care about the issues, it will do a great disservice to all of us. We don't want an Attorney General in office mainly because Mr. Cuomo wants him or her there. We want an AG who will be best for the people, chosen
A major problem that many representative democracies had, and still have, is securing minorities rights within a system ruled by the majority of that country. This is when the term modern pluralism comes into light. Modern pluralism is the idea that having a large number of parties within a government will create more power in the system, which ensures that not a single group will contain total control.
When Marco Rubio announced he would run for President, he said that he would not run for reelection of his Senate seat. Throughout the campaign, he was attacked for being inactive in the Senate, and stating that he does not like being a Senator. He also had a serious gaffe that made
Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe recently gave an order that would restore voting rights to hundreds of thousands of felons prior to the upcoming general election, but the Supreme Court of Virginia is currently reviewing a case that could ruin McAuliffe’s order. A Republican attorney for the state argued that the order was an unconstitutional overreach, while the opposing side said that the order was a daring, but perfectly legal use of his power. Nearly a quarter of Virginia’s African American population is not allowed to vote due to convictions and Virginia is only one of eleven states that requires individual exemption to vote after felons completed their sentence. Over eleven thousand ex-convicts have registered to vote since McAuliffe
He stated that if elected again he would only serve three more additional terms. He said this because he does not stand for the term limits set in Washington and how the government rewards long-term politicians as they do not allow for different people in government. He won the Republican Primary with 77 percent of the vote in 2010. He then went on to defeat democrat Patrick Murphy regaining his chair as Congressman in the 8th district. In 2012, Kathryn Boockvar ran for the position but lost to Fitzpatrick 57 percent to 43 percent. In 2014, he went up against a former Army Ranger democratic candidate Kevin Strouse and won the
Maura Healy is the candidate from the Democratic party running in the November 4, 2014 election for Massachusetts attorney general against Republican candidate John Miller. Her experience as a prosecutor and her achievements of lobbying for civil rights over the years makes her a prime candidate for our next attorney general.
In 2014, Republican Dan Patrick was elected to the office of Lieutenant Governor and won by twenty points. His main goals include securing the border and reducing taxes. Before he was elected as Lieutenant Governor,
Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has dropped out of the race to be US president. He dropped out because his campaign was struggling in the polls and he failed to make the cut into the main Republican presidential debate. He dropped out last month. Perry also ran in 2012 but dropped out after a series of gaffes. Rick Perry certainly possessed a resume to be a top-tier contender for the Republican nomination. However, he has been quickly eclipsed in the polls by political outsiders like Mr.Trump and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Just 4 years ago, in his first bid, Perry had a widespread support and seemed a real threat to Romney. I think what Perry did was actually smart, because if you know you're running behind in the polls then you should
Jan Brewer was elected in the year of 1982 and would go on to serve in the Arizona House of Representatives for three years. Following her success in the Arizona House of Representatives, Jan Brewer decided to run for a position in the Arizona State Senate in the year of 1985. While holding this position, Jan Brewer attempted to create a position of Lieutenant Governor in the state of Arizona. Jan Brewer argued that the next in line, Secretary of State, could not be a suitable candidate to take on the position of governor if need be. If the situation came up, she also proposed that the next in line should be of the same political party as the governor. Jan Brewer quickly rose through the rankings in the Arizona State Senate and captured the senior leadership position of majority whip during her last three years in the State Senate. In the year of 1996, Brewer ended her ten year streak as an Arizona State Senator. Following her success in the Arizona State Legislature, Brewer defeated Ed King and was elected chair(wo)man of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 1996. She held this position until 2002 when she decided to run for Arizona Secretary of

When asked how she became interested in politics, Hampton answered, “That is a God story,” explaining that she lost her job in 2012 and prayed for guidance on what to do next. After losing a run for state house in Bowling Green, she was contacted by, now Governor, Matt Bevins, who asked her to be his running mate. Hampton is now the 57th Lt. Governor of Kentucky, the first African-American in history to hold statewide office, and the 4th woman to hold the Lt. Governor’s position.
Chris Christie’s level of popularity is very low because of not gaining people’s attention, not backing up his words, and not competing. Gaining people’s attention with actions and speeches was something he was lacking, and he never stood out in any important decisions he made. Being known for something he did that was very important to the whole United States is something he haven’t done yet. Many years before he became government, he has dealt with terrorism and it was a major part of his career at the time (Elliot). Not backing up his words also brought attention and supporters away from him, he has been caught up in a lie plenty of times and according to media, people are fed up with that. Another problem with Chris Christie is that he does not know how to compete to standout. Chris Christie’s level of competiveness is very low. Chris Christie has never been competitive and is one of the main reasons he is not a good

NYC mayor says that the Cuomo administration is sitting on $380 million in federal funds for services NYC Health & Hospitals. These are the funds that are used to help poor people and people who are uninsured. Also Blasio administration claims State has no right to hold this fund! I totally agree with Dan, our leaders should stop this political drama and think about people! Our leaders are elected to serve us, not to sit on services which we are entitled
Like all famous leaders, Rudy Giuliani had his fair share of strengths and weaknesses. Giuliani showed the country and the world what true leadership was in the wake of 9/11. During a time of crisis, he demonstrated courageousness, dedication and composure. Even though Giuliani is mostly remembered for his strengths, his weaknesses are usually overlooked. He was criticized for being unfaithful and allowing lust to break up his marriage. Another weakness of Giuliani was his inconsistency to reprimand his police force.
