There have been many women throughout our history who have made a strong impact on the people of Arizona. In the 2000’s, an important woman who has made a great impact on Arizona is none other than Governor Jan Brewer. The positions she’s held and contributions she has made to Arizona are quite significant. Her positions held range from a member of the Arizona House of Representatives to becoming the Governor of Arizona. In addition, her stance on issues such as: gay rights, judicial appointments, and the Affordable Care Act are just a few examples of her contributions to Arizona. Janice Kay Drinkwine Brewer, Jan Brewer for short, was born on September 26,1944, in the beautiful city of Hollywood, California to parents Perry and Edna Drinkwine. …show more content…
Jan Brewer was elected in the year of 1982 and would go on to serve in the Arizona House of Representatives for three years. Following her success in the Arizona House of Representatives, Jan Brewer decided to run for a position in the Arizona State Senate in the year of 1985. While holding this position, Jan Brewer attempted to create a position of Lieutenant Governor in the state of Arizona. Jan Brewer argued that the next in line, Secretary of State, could not be a suitable candidate to take on the position of governor if need be. If the situation came up, she also proposed that the next in line should be of the same political party as the governor. Jan Brewer quickly rose through the rankings in the Arizona State Senate and captured the senior leadership position of majority whip during her last three years in the State Senate. In the year of 1996, Brewer ended her ten year streak as an Arizona State Senator. Following her success in the Arizona State Legislature, Brewer defeated Ed King and was elected chair(wo)man of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in 1996. She held this position until 2002 when she decided to run for Arizona Secretary of
The legislation of the state of Arizona is bicameral, with a Senate and a House of Representatives. Each Senator and Representative is elected for a two year term. There is a limitation of four consecutive terms. After serving four terms, they must be out of office for one term before they can be reelected to that office. There are certain qualifications to become a legislator. Those seeking office in the state Senate or House of Representatives must be at least 25 years of age, be a United States citizen, reside in the state for three years prior, and live in the county for one year prior to election. The job of a legislator in Arizona is part time, due to the limited time of the regular session. Their salaries, currently at
As for the Sb 1070 implemented by our own Governor Janet Brewer, that was originally enacted to improve our economy, safeguard our neighborhood, and secure our borders was intended to put ease to our state; it caused some turmoil. Though, the success was strong in the sense of securing our border, and making those neighborhoods a little safer to live in, causing some economic downfalls to hit our state; by these entrepreneurs closing shop and move back to Mexico in fear of deportation. Furthermore, it took way for our state revenue, for we no longer had state and federal funds flowing into our coffers for these immigrants being here; instead we were in jeopardy of losing this state and federal funding.

I found our reading this week to be very informative and interesting. Arizona’s Constitution just like the U.S. Constitution has pros and cons. “Arizona, like many Western states, adopted referendum, recall, and initiative in the early 20th century. Twenty-four states have a referendum provision of some kind, and many states have referendum, recall, and initiative expressly called for in their state constitution” (Potts, D., 2012). When amending the Arizona Constitution it involves a few steps, such as; “first, the amendment must be formally proposed in one of three different ways: (1) the voters can propose amendments using the constitutional initiative process; (2) the legislature can propose amendments using the constitutional referendum
In 2014, Republican Dan Patrick was elected to the office of Lieutenant Governor and won by twenty points. His main goals include securing the border and reducing taxes. Before he was elected as Lieutenant Governor,
As of today, Arizona’s current governor is Jan Brewer; she was elected to office January 21, 2009; she serves as Arizona’s 22nd governor. Also Arizona’s Director of Strategic Planning and Budgeting is John Arnold. According to the website, “Budget Solutions”, Arizona’s budget timeframe is annual, but some smaller agencies receive biennial budgets. Arizona’s fiscal years starts July 1st. Also in Arizona, by law, the state is required to submit a balance budget. Also in Arizona, the law does not forbid the state to carry over a deficit from one year to the next ("Arizona State State Budget Solutions"). In Florida, today the governor is Rick Scott; he was elected to office January 4, 2011; he serves as Florida’s 45th governor. According to the website, “Budget Solutions”, Florida has an annual budget timeframe, its fiscal year begins on July 1st, and it is also required to pass a balance budget, like Arizona. But by law, Florida is forbidden to carry over a deficit from one year to the next year. Florida takes budget very seriously because “Florida has one of the most aggressive policies for maintaining a balanced budget in the country, requiring that when the budget isn 't balanced, it is to be made balanced” ("Florida State State Budget Solutions"). However, both Arizona and Florida have other issues, processes, and spending priorities that impact their budgetary systems. One issue that has impacted the state’s budget is the Medicaid Expansion in the states. According to
The attorney general is required to meet all the minimum requires as well as two additional requirements. One of the additional requirements is that the attorney general has to be qualified and admitted to the practice of law before the Arizona Supreme Court. This means that the individual elected to this office must have pasted the state boards for legal qualifications. Another additional requirement for the attorney general is that they cannot be in private practice during the term they are serving. These are two very important additional qualifications that the attorney general has to have. The citizens of the state would not want just anyone to be able to act as the attorney general. What if someone with no law qualifications was elected to office? They would not understand the duties of the job and what is legal, ethical and just. It is also important that the attorney general not be in private practice during the term they are serving because that could pose a
In 1982 she was elected to the Florida State House of Representatives and the Florida Senate in 1986, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve in either body.
Arizona continues to add jobs at a very fast pace, comparing the 2nd quarter of 2012 to the same quarter in 2013. During the last year, hospitality, leisure, and construction added the most employment with each one increasing by over 10,000 positions (Hammond, 2013). Health services, professional and business services, financial activities, and education are in the top five and represent 85% of job gains. Arizona’s economy is still making very solid economic growth and continues to improve (Hammond, 2013).
Arizona gain statehood on February 14, 1912 as the forty-eighth state in the union. There were several events that led Arizona to statehood. President William Taft vetoed the first document for Arizona to become a state because he did not believe that citizens should use recall to remove judges from office (SU, 2008). This essay will give a detail timeline of the events leading up to Arizona becoming a state and the adoption of the Arizona Constitution. Also, included in this essay is a brief history of the events that influence Arizona Declaration of Rights.
Arizona’s historical development dates back to thousands of years ago. Arizona holds the second largest amount of indigenous/ Native American population of any other state in the United States. One of the first groups of people to live on Arizona’s land was the Native Americans, or otherwise called the American Indians. These Natives came much before any of the Europeans, or the Spanish settlers came to Arizona. There were three main Native American groups that truly began the exploration of Arizona. These groups include the Anasazi, Hohokam, and Mogollon tribes. Each of their tribes settled in different sections of Arizona ranging from Northeastern to Southeastern parts of the land.

Congress finally pushed for Arizona to have separate territorial status because of the discovery of precious metals. The first official governor, John Goodwin, took the oath of office on December 29, 1863. Prescott became the capital in 1864, then to Tucson (1867), then back to Prescott
