Culture is defined as the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another (Staff, 2015). Culture effects the way a person perceives, communicates and behaves in the world, what is “socially” acceptable in one culture is not necessarily acceptable in another. Common language, gestures and signals are used to communicate within each culture and are therefore an extension of culture and how you speak is effected by what you were taught and how you view the world. Communicating is a give and take process and it is an experience that you share with someone.
As humans we communicate constantly, using both verbal and nonverbal communication and what we understand is determined by

Americans seem to not really bother with their language, while France has The Académie Française which was established in 1635 to act as the official authority on the usages, vocabulary, and grammar of the French language, and to publish an official dictionary of the French language. Also when leaving as store, Walmart or the local 7/11 I have to say good bye and thank you. This is a custom in France and if you don’t do it the next time you go to the local butcher, lets you know about it, I think that the Butcher or the Baker must have given me a lot of hard times as a child because try as I might to not say thank you when leaving a store it just don’t happen.
Americans are known to be familiar, you meet them once now your friends. Well for me it is not like that there are stages and boundaries and levels of friendship and while if I know everyone I can be funny and charming if I don’t I have to watch, observe, assess and learn about who I am surrounded by. On the same note, it seems that Americans love everything and everybody, in France the word love is saved for your partner, parents, and children everything else you can like a lot but you would never love pizza in
It doesn’t matter what kind of ethnicity you are, or how you were brought up. Everyone is deeply rooted in their own culture. “Culture” has a different meaning to everyone. Comparing American culture to Chinese culture we will find many different meanings to the word “culture”. For example, we Americans are always looking for something bigger and better for our future, and the Chinese are content with a small reserved lifestyle with no intentions of changing it for something bigger. A culture is a way of life of a group of people-the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and are passed along by communication and imitation from
The cultures of Spain are European cultures based on a variety of historical influences, primarily based on pre-Roman Celtic and Iberian culture, and it is also just like American culture in this essay i will explain the differences and the similarities in the two and maybe you will get an understanding and see how they are alike and how they are different.
Over the past 100 years, the United States has changed the way it views other cultures including more respect, equality, and freedom for all people. As much as America has grown, has America really changed that drastically? Across the nation and world, cultural differences still exist, misunderstandings continue, and fighting persists. Recent attacks within the United States that are similar to the conflicts between the Japanese and Americans in the early 1900’s include the 9/11 attack, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, and the mass shooting in Orlando.
Although Canada and the United States share the same continent, they are divided by their unique ideas and views. After WWI ,Canada broke its ties with Britain and new independent nation was born with a unique culture. This new culture developed through the Canadian citizens. As a Canadian citizen, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie helped achieve autonomy from Britain and solidify national unity at home. Canadian inventor ,Fredrick Banting ,maintained his culture as Canadian and contributed to the world through his invention of insulin. Many artists, authors, actors , actresses and athletes have played their part in Canadian culture. During the 1920s and 1930s, Canada asserted independence from Britain and the United States to develop
Stepping out of your comfort zone isn't always easy, especially in a foreign setting. In my life, traveling has not only been a means of seeing new places, but gathering exposure to cultures that have led to a greater understanding of different and opposing beliefs that exist throughout the world. On my recent trip to Europe, I acquired knowledge of cultures that I could not even begin to comprehend had I not experienced it first hand. Experiencing circumstances on foreign grounds taught me that the area in which we live in can truly cultivate us into who we are and what we believe.
Holidays around the world can be celebrated on the same day, but are celebrated in diverse, unique ways, due to differences in culture and tradition. The culture of Americans vs. people from Hispanic countries varies quite a bit related to holidays. There is Holy Week and Easter, Christmas and Navidad, Day of the Dead and Halloween, etc. Since traditions are such a big part of every person’s life, we need to be comfortable sharing them. This will help to understand differences between cultures.
It was a dark and stormy night- except it wasn’t. It was actually a crisp, clear January morning. January 14, 2011 to be exact. It was the first time I had ever been outside the United States, and I was on a 13 hour nonstop flight to Israel. Even though I had been in an airplane before, this was a totally different experience. We were not allowed to get up, unless we were on the way to the bathroom, we were served dinner which was… interesting to say the least and thankfully, I didn’t get food poisoning (until the flight back to the U.S.). We also had in-flight TV, which was awesome because it had a plethora of new movies that I had never seen before! After the long flight I was extremely happy to be able to walk around, however we didn’t do
Every Culture has his own rules, characteristics, and has its different aspects. We have to learn how to adapt to those cultures every time we are facing them or we are in an environment that has a culture that is different from ours. We are living in a world where culture has become very important to know and try to adapt to. This paper will focus on analyzing the similarity and differences values, ethic and cultures of two different countries such as Burkina Faso and the US. As we all know, American cultures is an open minded, wide, and free country. Hofstede helps us have a better understanding of how multiples countries have a totally separate dimension. As for an example, Americans are known for their high individualism while Burkina Faso has a low individualism. As much as
Politics make up a great part of American culture. In the present, there are two major political parties in the United States and those are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Most Americans are either Democrats or Republicans. The Democrats are known to be liberal and left-leaning. They believe that the government serves the society best when it has an expanded role. The Republicans are known to be conservative and right-leaning. They believe that the government should have a smaller role and minimal power. Out of all the presidents the United States has had, 15 have been part of the Democratic Party and 18 have been part of the Republican Party. Republicans and Democrats typically have opposing viewpoints on issues. There are also
Traditional Japanese cultural values are influenced by Confucian values and ideology, this held standards determine what is acceptable or unacceptable and thus, define what is expected and respected in Japan (Miles, 2006). Confucian ideology asserts that social order is achieved and maintained through principles developed through human wisdom (Miles, 2006). Furthermore, emphasizes the importance of human relationships; to the Japanese it is important to respect, be faithful, and have consideration for the needs of others (Miles, 2006). Thus the Japanese, appear to follow the platinum rule, which promotes awareness of general and specific differences, implying that one should treat others the way they want to be treated (Johnson, 2017). The first five years in Holland were wonderful times, albeit difficult times; wonderful because we were creating a new life, in a new land, in a home of our own; difficult because after so many years of living through political conflict, my parents were impoverished and feeling disoriented being in a country where the culture was a stark contrast to the Indonesian way of life. As a young child, my mother’s parents took the family to Holland for an extended one year vacation, granted by the Dutch government where my grandfather worked as an accountant, however, my mother was too young to remember much about the ethnic differences to prepare for a permanent move. Nevertheless, my father and mother embraced the opportunity to “start from scratch.”
In the story of Samir, he illustrates that globalization and local culture wrestle with each other to determine what people deem correct. In his account, Samir portrays the westernized medicine’s dominance over an indigenous Costa Rican medicine man. In addition, Samir highlights many benefits that globalization opens the door to. For example, globalization has opened him to other cultures and languages allowing him to become more understanding of other people and to notice a unity among all people (Culture and Globalization, n.d.).
During colonial times, America was home to multiple cultures despite the considerable differences between one another. Native Americans and European colonists coexisted incongruously because neither wanted to adapt to the other’s customs. As a result, the two groups had different views of what American culture was to reflect. The natives believed that land belonged to everyone for the use of agricultural, while the English colonists viewed America as a land of personal opportunity and economic profit through native exploitation.
During my time of deployment, I experience a different culture that had open up my knowledge about life. It was the few months that I was in Kuwait and I had duty in the Kuwait Naval Base cafeteria and gym. There was a lot of Muslim workers there and I had to work with them, therefore; I started to socialize with them and learning there culture. They spoke very broken English but I was able to interpret it pretty well. I even had a chance to join them for their Ramadan and I was very honored with that invitation. After few months of interact with them I started to realize the only different between their culture and the American culture is that they don’t eat pork and prefer lamb, chicken, and fish as their primary protein diet. Although they
The United States of America being the third largest country in the world with more than 315 million inhabitants, consists of multicultural societies with ethnically diverse population. Since there are a lot of foreigners, the US culture has evolved in such a way accepting and tolerating other foreign cultures. US is very much influenced by protestant work ethics according to which people believe in themselves and their efforts to attain the goal of self-actualization and success. The rich diversity in the culture brought by foreigners, prevailing values of protestant ethics, hard work etc. have helped US to emerge as a superpower in the past years. Nearly every religion had its impact on US culture in one way or the other. The
