Dear Mrs. Christina, March 7, 2016 It satisfies me to be able to write this letter to inform you the best practices occurring in my classroom. Recently, my students’ wrote an autobiography from his/her childhood and also researched a place he/she traveled to. This activity supported the cross-disciplinary examination of English and History. First, my students’ worked on several worksheets to help them brainstorm on events in his/her life that lead up to his/her autobiography. In order to help each other’s thoughts to develop the students’ were able to interact with one another by sharing his/her experiences. In the drafted autobiography the students wrote in great detail about places they had traveled to. Later, they researched about the place they traveled to, but this time, they wrote about experiences they wish they could have had. Finally, the students’ shared with his/her classmates about his/her experiences and spoke about experiences they wish they could have in the future. This is considered a cross-disciplinary lesson because my students’ were able to explore geographical …show more content…
The following are examples that provide the importance of cross-disciplinary teach and learning:
• Elizabeth A. Wardle. (2004) Article: Can Cross-Disciplinary Links help us Teach “Academic Discourse” in FYC? Wardle’s article claims that cross-disciplinary teaching in writing is beneficial to the students’ because it teaches them to become successful writers not only in English but in other classes as well. My class took geographical skills and developed them into writing successfully.
• Margaret Letterman and Kimberley Dugan (2004) Article: Team Teaching A Cross-Disciplinary Honors Course Letterman and Dugan argue that collaborative teaching helps students’ enthusiasm and promotes interdisciplinary
The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, & Remy) entering college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although the writer uses stereotypical characters, it
This English class was the best English class I have ever had. There were no tests, vocabulary quizzes, or in class essays, which made the class less stressful. Before this English class, I was afraid that I would not enjoy writing many essays or writing so many words in one paper. Afterwards, essays have become something that is not so much my favorite task in the world, but it has become more enjoyable to an extent. Professor Sullivan’s class has taught me to formally write a research paper, to analyze a book through responding to different quotes from the story or novel, to understand magical realism, and to understand my own passion for school and how much effort I will be willing to put out in years to come.
Lopate opened up the article talking about himself and perfession and then moved on to share a story with the reader about his daughter about an experience she encounter. The story was about an esssay is daughter has wrote for the common app for college, Lopate though his daughter did a good job and that her writing was a reflection of her, to his surprise the school counselor advised his daughter to construct a new common app essay that took a more traditinal approach.
What provokes a person to write about his or her life? What motivates us to read it? Moreover, do men and women tell their life story in the same way? The answers may vary depending on the person who answers the questions. However, one may suggest a reader elects to read an autobiography because there is an interest. This interest allows the reader to draw from the narrator's experience and to gain understanding from the experience. When the reader involves him/herself in the experience, the reader encounters what is known and felt by the narrator. The encounter may provide the reader an opportunity to explore a
I chose my memoir for AP English Language and Composition as my best piece because it’s received a ninety percent and is the written work I’m most proud of. The reader should expect to find information about me that one wouldn’t know by simply looking at me. One will find how overcoming my own challenges and one that was thrown at me made the person I am today. One would discover my passion and determination to pursue a career in family law. The impressions I hope the reader gains about myself after viewing this piece is that I am a methodical writer as well as a psychological person who tends to hide it.
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn’t learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self-confidence and skills to take on the world on my own.
Culturally Responsive Teaching is a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning (Ladson-Billings, 1994). This approach to teaching encompasses how knowledge is both communicated and perceived by the students. The teacher must have a good relationship with the parents, have high expectations, learn about their students culture, have culturally mediated student-centered instruction, willing to reshape the curriculum, and be a facilitator in order to accomplish this method of teaching. These are key points a teacher must be willing to do if they intend to be an effective teacher especially in a highly culturally diverse area like central
This assignment will discuss the challenges and benefits for pupil’s learning when Mathematics is connected to Science. This cross-curricular link has been chosen as I wish to further deepen my understanding of Science and its cross-curricular links to Mathematics. The essay will explain what role Mathematics and Science play within the National curriculum, what cross-curricularity means followed by the discussion of the challenges and benefits including examples of how these are applied in work-based practice at primary school within upper key stage 2.
The Memo will directly address my growth as a writer throughout my time in EH 101-13. It will also highlight my current strengths and weaknesses in my own personal writing style.
My writing styles have changed drastically over the past four years of high school. This memo will explain how my writing has changed and how my knowledge of writing has improved.
'Making cognitive connections, within subjects and between subjects...' ( Piaget 1977, Cockburn and Haylock 2008,Rose 2009) is an aspect of cross-curricular learning. Generally speaking, cross-curricular learning is when skills, knowledge and attitudes of a number of disciplines which are applied to a single experience, problem, question, theme or idea. In simple terms, it's also known as a thematic approach. From this point, I'd be exploring the reasons why a thematic approach should be adopted in the classroom and this approach could deliver the four core subjects in the National Curriculum in Key Stage 1. On top of that I'd be exploring the issues raised of adopting a cross-curricular approach and the implications of using a theme-based
“Be a reflective teacher. Honestly look at what you do from time to time. Evaluate the purpose of your role as a teacher.” (Robert John Meenham, 2011)
Objective: After this lesson, the student will be able to reflect on one’s experience of everyday life, especially on a “depth experience”
Our schools are full of a variety of children who are diverse in their own ways. What comes to mind when you hear the word diversity within schools? Many people think of race or culture, but diversity in our schools is more than that. Diversity can include race, religion, culture, and even learning styles in a classroom. In the past classrooms where not that diverse consisting of white protestant students. Currently diversity in classrooms is on the rise big time. Today’s classrooms are more effective in diversity, learning styles, and influences than past years.
