Becoming a pediatric surgeon doesn’t just happen overnight. To become one, you need to go to medical school, and need a bachelor’s degree to go to medical school (BLS).Many years of school are needed before you can even step foot into a hospital. Once a bachelors degree is equipped, you can apply for medical school. Medical school isn’t all in a classroom. Four years of medical school are needed (healthychildren.org). Two of those years are in a classroom, the other two in hospitals, watching surgeries and observing different cases (learningpath.org). Still, more schooling is needed. There are many different skill sets that are needed to be a good one, and even more to become one of the greats. The difference between a general surgeon and a pediatric surgeon is that pediatric surgeons work with minors, which is anyone younger than 18 in the United States.. They’re working with a completely different mindset. Pediatric surgeons have to be extremely patient and know how to talk in a way that children can understand (healthychildren.org). It’s hard to know what problems to look for if you can’t get the child to explain to the best of their abilities. Most kids don’t like the doctor’s office, so you’re already at a disadvantage. If you’re not patient, you might take longer than the time you have to find and fix the issue. All doctors have to be able to think clearly under stressful situations (mymajors.com). Someone’s heart could have stopped, but you have to be able to tell a nurse what medication and how much of it to give. Being a doctors is about being able to think on your feet. You’ll never enter a situation where you know everything. There’s always a chance something can go wrong, and being a slow thinker could pay for a life. All doctors have to be good at explaining (mymajors.com). Explaining what’s wrong is just as important as fixing it. People need them to take care of them. The employment rate will grow about 14%, starting from 2014 and ending in 2024 (BLS.gov). That is a huge percent of increase. Many jobs are going down, but doctors have a special need to the community. They fix what’s wrong and comfort people with hope. Robots won’t be able to replace that. Pediatric surgeons work full time (BLS.gov). Full time isn’t just your common 9 to 5 work days. All surgeons work night shifts. Night shifts can last all night long (12 hours!) Some surgeries can even last over 12 hours. There are about 708,300 surgeons in the U.S. (2014), and they get paid around 240, 440 dollars a year (BLS.gov). Surgeons get paid more by how many years of experience they have. Also, they can get more because of how they work and if they’re well known.
