There are many good and bad aspects of animal testing, but the pros clearly outweigh the cons. Animal testing has been around since ancient times when animals were dissected to gain knowledge about the body and organs. The animals killed from animal testing make up a tiny percentage of the total animals killed every year. When just considering the animals used for food compared to the animals used for testing, testing animals make up a mere 2.6 percent of that number. Public safety far outweighs the lives of the small amount of animals killed.

Animal testing has its benefits towards human health. Improvement in health of the human race involves animal testing. Cancer, asthma, polio, TB, meningitis, smallpox, and the human papilloma virus (HPV) all have treatments that have come from animal testing. As a result of animal testing many people would be dying or suffering from the disease. Although, many people believe animals should not be used for animal testing.

First, animal testing is very harmful to animals. 100 million animals are harmed or killed because of testing. For example, the poor animals are given painful tests until they are not needed any more or eventually die. Just because they don't test things on humans, doesn’t mean that they should be doing it to animals. Animals testing is harmful to innocent animals.

There are also alternative methods that replace the need for the animals. Testing animals has contributed to many life savings cures and treatments, along with animals themselves benefiting from the results of the testing. Animals are also similar to humans in many ways and are appropriate test subjects. Animal testing needs to stop because every year 100 million animals die. The animals have no say in this treatment being done to them. Animals cannot be tested in a variety of human procedures despite what the benefits are.

Although, many people believe that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments, innocent animals used in laboratories are deliberately harmed, for a company’s benefit, and are usually killed at the end of the experiment. Animal testing has negative effects on not only animals, but on society and the economy. Some reasons why include, but are not limited to: alternative methods exist that are safer, ethical, and cheaper; billions of dollars are wasted each year on animal testing because neither the corporations nor the customers are benefiting from it; and just because the product is tested for animals, it does not necessarily make it safe for humans. Therefore, because animal testing is unreliable, leads to billions of wasted dollars, and causes an incredible amount of animal suffering, we must begin to use alternative methods and raise awareness about this huge issue.

Many people believe that animal testing is a necessary thing that has to happen to help the human race. Others think that it doesn't cause much harm and turn a blind eye. That is not true testing on animals is harmful to the economy, to humans and to the animals involved.
