MUSI 1306 Music Appreciation MUSICAL ACTIVITY 3 Dr. Oscar Dressler, DMA - Professor of Music Watch and listen carefully to this youtube video: Cecilia Bartoli performing the aria Agitata da due venti from the opera “La Griselda” by Antonio Vivaldi. The Baroque period marks the rise of the virtuoso singer, he/she who has amazing vocals, amazing vocal technique and one who mesmerizes his/her audience because of the unbelievable range, beauty and power of his/her voice. Cecilia Bartoli is the daughter of two singers that work at the most famous opera house in Itay, the Scala of Milan, and she was born with the gift of her amazing voice. Her fame permeates our whole world. She has been trained by her mother and the two share a most nurturing relationship because of their passion and love for opera and music in general. You might want to watch more videos in youtube simply by entering the name of the singer, Cecilia Bartoli and you will be able to see lots of other examples including a video showing Cecilia and her mother sharing a lesson together. Listen to her performance, watch her body language, and observe her passion and her demeanor as she puts herself in character to surrender a most astonishing rendition of this most demanding aria for soprano. Then answer the questions below and then describe and criticize her performance. No specific length is required. You must try hard to use a musical vocabulary to address Cecilia’s performance. When you finish, save this activity to your computer, upload it and send it. A true homage to Vivaldi! 1. What is the complete name of the composition in Italian? (see the name in youtube). Vivaldi - Agitata da due venti (Cecilia Bartoli) 2. What kind of instruments do you observe in the orchestra? Woodwinds, brass, percussion or mainly strings? I see mostly strings with the exception of one woodwind, the bassoon. 3. From the textbook: Who was Vivaldi and what contributions did he make to music and society? Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher, and cleric. He was born in March 1678 and died on July 28, 1741. Although he was born in Venice, he is now considered to be one of the most important composers of the Baroque period. His influence was felt throughout Europe throughout his lifetime. He is most well-known for producing a great number of instrumental concertos, particularly for the violin but also for a wide range of other instruments. The Four Seasons, is considered to be his most famous body of music.
4. This is a true example of the “Concitato” style of the Baroque period. The term “Concitato” IS NOT the same as the term “Concerto.” They are two different things! In accordance with what you have learned from the lesson material, what is “Concitato ” style? Conciato style is the way that Italian music from the 1600s used string tremolos and quickly repeated vocal notes to show rage or a battle. 5. How is the “concitato” style used by the composer in his composition (how does he show this style in his work, or through what elements)? He used a lot of staccato notes in the performance and the strings in the background were playing at a fast tempo and with tremolos, as was Cecilia while singing. Your comments about her performance: It was a breathtaking performance. Her staccato notes and changing of notes quickly was impressive. She has excellent breath control and projects her voice so amazingly. I only have positive comments about the performance.
