Concept Introduction:
The bond result from the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions is called ionic bond and the bond result from the mutual sharing of electrons between atoms is called covalent bond.
The bond order is defined as the number of electron pairs that are shared between two atoms. The bond order in single bond is one. The bond order in a double bond is two and in triple bond a bond order is three.
The increase in bond order between two atoms increases the strength of the bond and decreases the distance of bond.

- What aspect of the following Lewis structure indicates that the concept of coordinate covalency is needed to explain the bonding in the molecule?arrow_forwardCarbon monoxide (CO) forms bonds to a variety of metals and metal ions. liS ability to bond to iron in hemoglobin is the reason that CO is so toxic. The bond carbon monoxide forms to metals is through the carbon atom: MCO a. On the basis of electronegativities, would you expect the carbon atom or the oxgen atom to form bonds to metals? b. Assign formal charges to the atoms in CO. Which atom would you expect to bond to a metal on this basis? c. In the MO model, bonding MOs place more electron density near the more electronegative atom. (See the HF molecule in Figs. 4-54 and 4-55.) Antibonding MOs place more electron density near the less electronegative atom in the diatomic molecule. Use the MO model to predict which atom of carbon monoxide should form bonds to metals.arrow_forwardExplain why bonds occur at specific average bond distances instead of the atoms approaching each other infinitely close.arrow_forward
- According to the VSEPR model, what are the arrangements of two, three, four, five, and six valence-shell electron pairs about an atom?arrow_forward7.50 Chemical species are said to be isoelectronic if they have the same Lewis structure (regardless of charge). Consider these ions and write a Lewis structure for a neutral molecule that is isoelectronic with each of them, (a) CN , (b) NH4+ . (c) CO32arrow_forwardWhat is the molecular geometry (same as molecular shape) if you have 2 single bonds, 1 doubles bond and 1 lone pair around the center atom?arrow_forward
- What is the molecular structure of a molecule that has a trigonal planar electron-pair geometry and one lone pair on the central atom?arrow_forwardExplain percent ionic character of a bond. Do any bonds have 100% ionic character?arrow_forward6) Explain how o and a bonds are similar and how they are different. A) Differences: o bonds are stronger and result from end-to-end overlap and all single bonds are o bonds; a bonds between the same two atoms are weaker because they result from side-by-side overlap, and multiple bonds contain one or more n bonds (in addition to a o bond). B) Similarities: Both types of bonds result from overlap of atomic orbitals on adjacent atoms. C) Both A and B are correct 7) How many o and a bonds are present in the molecule HCN (H-C=N) ? A) two o (H-C and C-N) and two A B) two o (H-C and C-N) and one C) one o (H-C) and three narrow_forward
- 8. In the sulfur tetrafluoride (SF4) molecule, all four F atoms are bonded to the central S atom. The following question set concerns this molecule.a) Draw the Lewis structure for sulfur tetrafluoride (SF4). [2]b) Which electron pair geometry does the SF4 molecule belong to? [1]c) Which single word best describes the molecular geometry or shape of the SF4 molecule?arrow_forwardConsider the compound with the folloring lewis structure: Draw the molecule to show its correct 3 dimensional shape, then label the shape around each central atom. What are the bond angles here?arrow_forwardWhy is rotation about the bond axis possible for single-bonded atoms but not double-bonded atoms?arrow_forward
