Chapter 8, Problem 36RQ
When a flowing fluid is stopped, its pressure increases. This is called stagnation pressure. The stagnation pressure is determined by: Pstagnation = ½ρv2 + Psurface, where ρ is the fluid density, v the fluid velocity, and Psurface the atmospheric pressure. Calculate the stagnation pressure in units of atmospheres [atm] for acetone flowing at a velocity of 15 feet per second [ft/s]. Assume the specific gravity of acetone is 0.785.

Air is allowed to flow from a reservoir with temperature of 21∘C and with pressure of 5[MPa]through a tube. It was measured that air mass flow rate is 1[kg/sec]. At some point on the tubestatic pressure was measured to be 3[MPa]. Assume that process is isentropic and neglect thevelocity at the reservoir, calculate the Mach number, velocity, and the cross-sectional area at thatpoint where the static pressure was measured. Assume that the ratio of specific heat isk=Cp/Cv=1.4.

You have a large storage tank having 95 inches of ethylene glycol and 45 inches of
ethanol, one floating on top of the other. If the two liquids are not mixed, which one is
on top? Why? If the tank is enclosed and has a gas pressure (gage) at its top of 6 psi,
what is the pressure at the bottom of the tank (in psi)? [ethanol on top because it has a
lower density, P = 11.1 psi]
Consider a compressor which is adiabatic. At the inlet of the compressor the
temperature is 380 K and pressure is 130 kPa and the air passes at the rate of 1 kg/s.
At the exit of the compressor the temperature is 530 K and pressure is 785.7 kPa.
Find the volumetric flow rate of air at the exit [m/s] and also, power consumed by
the compressor [kW].
Assumptions. Steady state process. Kinetic and potential energy changes are
negligible. Air is an ideal gas with variable specific heats.
