Chapter 54, Problem 15TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

An experiment to test that predators in an aquatic ecosystem regulate the ecosystem’s primary productivity.

Introduction:

Food web consists of trophic levels based on feeding habits of organisms. Primary producers are the first trophic level. Herbivores feed on primary producers and form the second level. Carnivores, feeding on herbivores, are the third trophic level. Detritivores and decomposers link all trophic levels. The interactions between the trophic levels that control the ecosystem are called a trophic cascade.

Decomposers, because they are at the top of the food web and receive the most energy. D. Decomposers, because they break down organisms from all trophic levels to obtain energy.
