Sankofa Review
The film opened with Mona doing a model shoot. She was listening to her demanding white photographer ordering her to have more provocative looks. This Mona, has conformed into the white supremacy, adapting preconscious beliefs, abstract to black culture, and stubborn towards black ideas. Mona had no connection to her inner being and had little insight on who she really was. While continuing to capture photos, Mona and her photographer decides to capture near the Fortress. She becomes distracted by a drummer who leads her inside of the Fortress. Mona is now suddenly locked in a dark room. When she does find light, she noticed that she is surrounded by other Africans who were bound and shackled

He does not understand why his own mother would do such a thing to him. During this moment, Joe begins to transition from precociousness to the confrontation stage. After he kills his mother, he is confronted by Shola, who tells him that his mother is good and she is not the devil. Joe arrives at the Church with his mother’s body being carried in his arms. He lays her at the alter and begins to pray for forgiveness and to say his final goodbyes. His father rudely suggests that he removes Nunu’s body from the church. Joe’s will for his mother and his emotions got the best of him when he confronted his father about the truth and him being his child. Joe was intensely outraged and sat the church on fire burning himself and his father. At the moment of Joe’s death, Joe was in the internalization stage of black consciousness. Joe began to have positive attitudes about his mother’s culture and beliefs. Sankofa was a great a film analyzing African culture by reliving events in the past to gain a greater understanding of self-identity. The film has several depictions of African culture through its characters as they each portrayed a different stage of acceptance. Millione’s black conscious scale assists with understanding the acceptance of African culture and
Linden had threatened her that if she tried to escape, he would kill both Mayla and her baby. She did not have much of a choice, either she escaped and tried to get help for them or they all would be killed. Joe takes after his mother for her bravery and puzzle solving, he was the one who went back to the round house after it was investigated and thought out the whole scenario leading him to find the gas can in the lake. Since Joe was at the age where he is transitioning into an adult from a child he can look at this in two perspectives. He wants revenge on the man that sodomized his mother, he intently speaks to her in her room, “Mom, listen. I’m going to find him and I’m going to burn him. I’m going to kill him for you” (89), this is the child side of him speaking. His mother belittles him attempting to calm him down and change his mind. Of course he wants cold blooded revenge, he has an undying love for his mother and want to see the perpetrator suffer because he hurt Geraldine. The adult side helps him plan out events a little more carefully. Although, Joe and Linden are a lot alike, they are both angry and both confused, but for different reasons. Joe is angry at the law and how they cannot hold Linden in jail and cannot persecute him for his wrong doings. Linden is angry because his girlfriend had a baby with the man she was working for and not him. It is safe to say Linden is evil and should be held responsible for all of his crimes. “I am really one sick fuck. I suppose I am one of those people who just hates Indians generally and especially…(161). He knows that he is not in the right mental state, but proceeds to live the way he does. The life he lives is fearless yet dangerous, although he does not look at it as dangerous because he believes that he knows all the loop holes through the law and can get away with whatever he pleases. Linden is confident in himself that

Many books have great stories to tell. A lot have a deep message to convey. Siddhartha however, is a unique book. Though simple in its style, it is deep in meaning. One can take in its plot and get out of it a good story. On the other hand one can read deeper into it and try to find meaning from the story. Hermann Hesse somehow manages to tell something to the reader that is much deeper than the words he writes on the page. Perhaps it is the words he chooses that helps readers relate to Siddhartha. Maybe it’s the dreamlike feeling one gets after reading the book, partially due to how time is not linear in it. Whole years pass without notice, then just a day or two are focused on. This shows how Hesse is less

The short animated film Kakania is an experimental film focusing on the constant, chaotic nature of urban civilization and contrasts it to an organized, ritual-oriented tribal societies. It relies heavily on the music to drive the animation forward. The movements of the figures are timed exactly in sync with the timing of the music. The animation itself requires interpretation from the viewers because there is no distinct plot shown or explained. The style clearly reflects the artist’s personal style, which also happens to be representative abstract-based.
