Explain the theme of the book (summary/overview) in your own words, and why this is important to our understanding of the information technology. The theme of this book is how businesses in today’s world use ever-improving technology to collect data, convert it into information and business intelligence, and combine this information and intelligence with the knowledge of the workers to help make the best decisions they possibly can for the benefit of the company and the customers. Data consists of the descriptions that can be used to summarize the raw facts of everyday happenings and objects. These raw facts can be anything from customer count to average sale per ring. PayPal co-founder Max Levchin said once said that “The world is now awash in data and we can see consumers in a lot clearer ways.” To a business owner like Max, data is important because it provides the means to make better decisions for the customer.
The main goal of a for-profit business is to make money, and by having access to the right data a manager is going to be able to better understand what a customer wants and how to generate more sales. Data is also going to help a manager make better business decisions when it comes to the overall operation of the store, such as how many people to hire or how much of a certain material to produce or buy. The process that is used to monitor an entire system of inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback is known as systems thinking. An example of this would be a factory that uses systems thinking to monitor the production of a good on an assembly line. There are inputs (materials), processes (the materials being assembled), outputs (the finished product), and the feedback (which monitors and maintains stability of the assembly line). This is essential for business operations because looking at these four things as their own single component is not nearly as beneficial as understanding the whole process. This does not mean that each component won’t have experts that understand one part of the process more than the others, but it is important for the manager or CEO to know how a product is made from start to finish.
