I enjoy community involvement and believe that everybody should lend a hand in their community. I have many volunteer experiences within my community, both through clubs and on my own accord. I plan to become a role model for my peers in community involvement, encouraging others to join in, by actively participating in volunteer work. Furthermore, I expect to enrich the Honors Program own community involvement by researching and discussing new opportunities for students to reach out to their community. As a result, I will encourage others to help out in making our community a better place, and subsequently gain a broader perspective through our involvement. Therefore, I plan to impact the Honors Program and community through my consistent involvement in volunteer

The reason that I believe that volunteer work and work in general is vital to success in the today’s world and society is because the generation that I am apart of is lack of a better term lazy.The motto of the entitled generation is procrastination is key. The most important part in forming a generation comes from the parents. The outcome of a generation’s attitude always leads back to the source (the parents). Volunteer work in present time is very important for the youth, but is equally as important for adults too. Some local organizations in Juneau are Love Incorporation, Helping Hands-Healing Hands LLC, Saint Vincent De Paul, and Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC). Politically, socially, environmentally or one person at a time, how will you give back to society? Day in and day out many citizens change the world, or they do just the opposite and make the world a worse place than when they woke up. The article I chose to review is, “Community Service” written by Robert Coles. The article tells a story of college students who make a difference in the world through peer tutoring, an act of community service, and have such an impact that they act as role models for Coles and he begins to do the same. Briefly in the beginning of the article, Coles states that, “students are likely to express their lofty political and social impulses and practical desires to change the world through community service, even if in limited or modest ways.”(Robert Coles, pg.93) We must make an ultimate decision about the world we live in, will we choose to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens or discriminate and punish not only them but ourselves by not sharing the knowledge we have been taught.

Often as we grow our schedules we forget to acknowledge the fact that our name does not read “volunteer needed”. It has been said, and I sincerely repeat, that if we fail ever say no than our yes loses its value. A resounding alarm greeted an early six o'clock sunlight that signaled the end of a sleep cycle. Pulling on clothes and a quick flash of vision directed at a schedule summed up the morning other than the arrival to a National Honor Society meeting, which would be followed by a Leo club lunch meeting and trailed by a Business Professionals of America after school practice. A typical day of a Stephenson High School senior displays in this way. They are involved in many activities, both school oriented and community involved. This leaves little to no time to develop personality traits other than ones that involve servitude. While it is important to be involved in the community, overinvolvement decreases the quality of the rendered services and overwhelms the individual performing these service

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” A quote from Winston Churchill that reflects social responsibility. Social responsibility requires you to put your best foot forward due to legal responsibility. It includes the idea that its superior to be driven by a problem rather than reactive. This includes eliminating anything that causes corruption, unethical and delinquent behavior that may bring a negative impact on the supporters around the environment or the community alone before any type of behavior takes place.

My project relates to the course objectives twelve and seven this is because it talks about inclusion, in which all types of diversity are respected, appreciated, and valued in America. As well as the vital role of the people in creating and maintaining a society through voluntarism and civic engagement, a role that can complement and replace the role of the government ensuring the well-being of society. Civic engagement involves “working to form a distinction at intervals the civic life of one’s community and developing the combination of information, skills, values and motivation to form that distinction. It suggests that promoting the quality of life throughout a community, through every political and non-political process” (Erlich, 2000). Civic engagement includes every paid and unpaid style of political policy, environmentalism, and community and repair. Volunteering is one kind of civic engagement. Many of the nation’s volunteer’s group are youngsters. 59 percent of teenagers in the U.S. are recorded for their participation in youth volunteer. Most youth volunteers do so out of selflessness and by wanting to make a difference throughout other individual’s lives.

The responsibilities include one’s respect, cooperation and participation with members and towards the community. Even children’s have the right to general need such as food, safe home, and clothing. Their guardians or parents are responsible to provide the necessary care and need for the children. However, most prominently citizenship today requires people knowing of public problems and acting together to solve the problems. Volunteering to help the community illustrates a lead participation within the community. This means taking role to join cleaning up the environment, visiting hospitals or nursing homes and share joy and love with them simply through communication. Moreover, volunteering can be intending of fighting a wrong in the community purpose for the common good. In other words, forming a group alliances and building up the strength to stand up against injustices. There are many instances throughout American history such as abolition of slavery, the women’s suffrage, civil rights movement, environment movement, public education and much more. By working together, we learn respect, honor, and responsibilities of rights. The benefit of at the most by encouraging the people in our community to participate would result in a better chance of more participation than not doing anything. “Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together” (Ryan). These words said by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, reflects the words my parents would always say to me when I was little. I would donate old clothes that did not fit, or toys I did not play with anymore. Every summer I would volunteer at my town’s public library, as well as at my church. However, as I got older, doing the simple tasks at the library felt tedious and uninteresting so I stopped volunteering for a while. There were times when I had spare time that could have and should have been put to use volunteering, but I did not have the motivation. However, after being inducted into my High School’s National Honors Society, I needed volunteer hours in order to remain in it. This was the motivation I needed to begin volunteering again.

Discussing about volunteering to teenagers should be the first step for a better life, since teenagers are the future of tomorrow and they will leave a mark from yesterday. Volunteering has been such an important matter, that schools in many countries around the world established that 12th grade students will need certain hours of community service in order to graduate. But the frequent answers all the schools are getting are “Why do I need to volunteer? I have better things to do!” What people are forgetting is that each one of them is part of a community, a community that is not perfect and that the government sometimes forgets about their problems or needs, because obviously the government needs to take care of other things that require more attention. People are not only helping others, they are also helping themselves (Volunteering).

Based on my community service project and my participation in this particular class, I feel that I have a better understanding of my social responsibility. Although I have volunteered on several occasions, it was not until I served at the local food bank, that I have a better understanding. I feel as though I have an obligation to serve my community because after all, homelessness can happen to anyone at any part of their lives. Volunteering at the local food bank, gave me a better understanding of peoples struggles and also helped me to not be too quick to judge when it comes to seeing people live out on the streets. I no longer have the mindset that people living out on the streets chose that life nor are they drug/alcohol

Another could be volunteering for the next women’s march; but how does that show social responsibility? In Pat Nanzer article, “Individual Rights and Community Responsibilities”, he notes how American society show voluntary actions by working together for a cause. For example, the civil rights movement. People took time out of their already busy lives to work with others and fight for equal rights for all. It was the people’s responsibility to work together and fight for a cause.

Social Responsibility can be “negative,” in that it is a responsibility to refrain from acting or it can be “positive,” meaning there is a responsibility to act. Being socially responsible not only requires participating in socially responsible activities like recycling, volunteering and mentoring, but to actually make it a lifestyle. “But does everyone on earth have an equal right to an equal share of its resources,” (Hardin 365). Only through a commitment to embrace and embed social responsibility into people’s personal value and belief system can people truly become socially responsible in

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) is a term describing a company’s obligation to be accountable to all of its stakeholder in all its operation and activities. Socially responsible companies consider the full scope of their impact on communities and the environment when making decisions, balancing the needs of stakeholder with their need to make profit.

Volunteerism enables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their future interest. According to source 2, “community service teaches us through experience - about the relationship between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in essence, about human being”. While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial moral lessons in the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering, students are reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a part of it. Nevertheless, the common misconception linked to graduating College students is that they are well-rounded adults, who have done their time and are ready and able to enter the working force and go on with their lives. The fact of the matter is that not all recent college students are mature and knowledgeable on their community and the world at large. “Teens who volunteer increase their knowledge of the world and the problems that face it” (“Youths”). This quote is not only applicable to teens, but college students as well; unfortunately, college students become isolated from the rest of the world while they are in their course of study and do not make time to give back to the community that helped them become who they are.
