Social Responsibility In American Society

Social responsibility is generally regarded as a duty of an organization’s management towards the benefit and well-being of the society in which it is engaged. The organization must behave ethically considering the social, cultural, economic and environmental issues.

Abraham Lincoln said, “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today”. My responsibility to America is to take it. Being a teen in today’s culture I believe many teens think they cannot have an impact and that they don’t need to take responsibility. Of course I can mess around till November 14, 2019, the day I turn eighteen, and suddenly become a mature adult. Not exactly! I can have an impact on my neighborhood, city, the whole state, or even all of America. Defy the cliche that media conditions us to believe.

Volunteering is considered doing a good deed in which can help to implement development skills such as, meeting new people. Who knew that enjoying yourself and meeting new people will be such fun while volunteering your time and assistance in helping someone else? Preparing and packaging hot food to be delivered to senior citizens in the local community really made me feel like a did a great deed!

While being a good, law abiding citizen, is the first step to social responsibility, a really crucial part is being involved and doing your part. The article, “Individual Rights and Community Responsibilities, written by Pat Nanzer, informs that, “History records voluntary actions by private citizens working together to right injustices, change directions and pursue benefits for the common good. This list includes the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement. In every case, people voluntarily came together with a shared sense of purpose for the common good.” This shows that volunteer work, when done as a community, can really change things and make a big impact.

However, volunteering can be difficult to achieve as it “relies disproportionately upon citizens possessing ample time and resources [which] risks favoring certain members of society over others. This encourages the dominance of extreme interests [and] outcomes that civic engagement seeks to avoid” (Civic Engagement, 2018). By volunteering and demonstrating philanthropism, individuals gain influence over others who recognize their work. Socially Responsible American When we hear the phrase “socially responsible American,” what thoughts run through our minds? Probably someone that cleans up after others who litter or make a mess of things, maybe someone that will take time out of their day to do community service, we might even categorize them as tree huggers. When we take a look at what truly makes a good “socially responsible American,” we see citizens who do community service, are good leaders, and have a voice in current events. Doing community service will not only help those in that community, but it will set one of the best examples that can be set in any community.

The social responsibility has lots of argument, and some economists, such as Milton Friedman, don’t support it because they said it will effect on the profit and revenue, and the money they spend it on the society most, invest it in other projects that have a value, and it will make some money for the firms. On the other hand, there are economists that support it, and they think when firms invest some money in the society and make it better, and it will appear on the firm’s performance, and here are some arguments for and against the social responsibility, and some examples about the social responsibility. Social responsibility as an american can be learned many ways and has many factors to it. Anyone can learn to be socially responsible with the right help and guidance. When we think of social responsibility, we think of the effort and trust that an individual is willing to take in order to benefit the needs of others . It plays as a major role in society in which it focuses on the community. It is a duty that we are obligated to fulfill and without it, the economy would be much unorganized and inconsiderate to the public. The heartbreaking incident that occurred on August 1, 2007 in Minneapolis, Minnesota of the I-35W bridge collapse pointed out a perfect example of why behaving ethically is an important factor in our society. After this tragic accident on the Mississippi Bridge, it proved that without the commitment that we put in certain features, negative outcomes are most likely to occur.

Social Responsibility can be “negative,” in that it is a responsibility to refrain from acting or it can be “positive,” meaning there is a responsibility to act. At the beginning of this course I wasn’t sure what was meant by social responsibility and civic engagement. During this course I realized the meaning of both and the responsibilities that both imply. A definition of social responsibility that I found particularly poignant and concise comes from Entrepreneur Magazine, “Acting with concern and sensitivity, aware of the impact of your actions on others, particularly the disadvantaged” (Entrepreneur Magazine.com).
