Social Responsibility In American Society

Mothers have always told their children to be respectful to others, whether it’s the dead or their next door neighbor. They group up with some responsibility to know respect. But do they have social responsibility? Social responsibility can mean many different things to many different people in American society. However, it could mean to respectful and active in a community, or to vote and speak out. American society is socially responsible when they are active in their community and staying out of trouble while also being a respectful person. Volunteering is one of the many ways people show that they are socially responsible. According to Jennifer Self’s article, “Civic Responsibility”, volunteering means to give up time or labor to help others without being paid in some kind of way. Another could be volunteering for the next women’s march; but how does that show social responsibility? In Pat Nanzer article, “Individual Rights and Community Responsibilities”, he notes how American society show voluntary actions by working together for a cause. For example, the civil rights movement. People took time out of their already busy lives to work with others and fight for equal rights for all. It was the people’s responsibility to work together and fight for a cause. They did not need to work at all, in fact there were many who stayed home and watched from a tv screen as the events took place, but for those who fought for others volunteered their lives to cause.
