Question
Chapter 1, Problem 66TQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The order of reactivity in nucleophilic substitution reactions: phosphate>thiols>esters>amides, based on the pKa values. pKa values are given as: phosphoric acid- 1×10-3, hydrogen sulfide- 1×10-7, alcohols- 1×10-17 and ammonia- 1×10-36 .
Introduction:
pKa is an acid dissociation constant; it gives a quantitative measure of an acid’s strength in a solution. It shows the tendency of an acid to be able to lose a proton. The more positive the value of pKa, the smaller is the extent of dissociation.

When a purine or a pyrimidine is linked through a β-N-glycosidic link to C-1 of a pentose, the molecule is called a _____________ .
When a purine or pyrimidine is linked through a b-Nglycosidic link to C-1 of a pentose, the molecule is calleda _________________________.
Protease is an enzyme that catalyzes the breaking of amide bonds which is very stable at “mild” conditions, namely body temperature and pH 7 (if done in the lab requires hot conditions, concentrated HCl for hours). Some proteases have two aspartic acid residues at their active sites. Write the reaction mechanism (which follows general acid-base catalysis)
