Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the small pebble to have the same density as the boulder from which it broke off, is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume. Density is the mass of a substance per unit volume. It is an intensive property of a substance.
Answer to Problem C1.5RE
Density of a substance depends on the material it is made of. The pebble is formed by breaking off from the large boulder so it has the same material as the boulder.
Density is an intensive property of a substance. It does not depend on the size and amount of the material but only depends on the type of matter.
Since the pebble and boulder are made of same material, they will have same density irrespective of their size.
Explanation of Solution
Every object/ matter is made up of some material or substance. Matter can be measured by using two properties called mass and volume.
The amount of substance in a matter is called mass. The amount of space taken up by matter is called volume. Density is mass per unit volume of a substance.
Density of a substance depends on the material it is made of. The pebble is formed by breaking off from the large boulder so it is made of the same material as the boulder. To calculate density of boulder and pebble we have to measure the mass and volume of each.
Density is an intensive property of a substance. It does not depend on the size and amount of the material but only depends on the type of matter.
Since the pebble and boulder are made of same material, they will have same density irrespective of their size.
Density of a substance does not change with change in size and shape of matter. As long as the material remains same density does not vary. Different materials have different densities.
