Elements have different isotopes as there is difference in number of neutrons.
For example hydrogen has three isotopes 1H1, 1D2 and 1T3.
Out of these three 1H1 has maximum abundance in nature. It means this isotope is most stable isotope.
Thus by checking the maximum abundance it can be figured out which one is the most common isotope of an element.
