Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 48E

The matching is (a)V,(b)II,(c)VI,(d)III,(e)I,(f)IV

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Polar equations are given as,

  (a)r=θ,0θ16π  (b)r=θ2,0θ16π   (c)r=cos(θ3)(d)r=1+2cosθ              (e)r=2+sin3θ             (f)r=1+2sin3θ

And graphs are given as,

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 1

Graph of (a)r=θ,0θ16π :

Since, the graph r=θ is a spiral and 16π=8(2π) that is 8 revolutions.

If θ=2π then r=2π and if θ=16π then r=4π

Then the difference between the origin to the point at which the last revolution that intersects the polar axis is 4π2π3 times the distance from the origin to the point at which the first revolution that intersects the polar axis. Hence, this is graph V.

Graph of (b)r=θ2,0θ16π :

Since, the graph r=θ2 is a spiral and 16π=8(2π) that is 8 revolutions.

If θ=2π then r=(2π)24π2 and if θ=16π then r=(16π)2=256π2

Then the difference between the origin to the point at which the last revolution that intersects the polar axis is 256π24π2=64 times the distance from the origin to the point at which the first revolution that intersects the polar axis. Hence, this is graph II.

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 3

Graph of (c)r=cos(θ3) :

Since, the graph r=cos(θ3) is a limacon with inner loop. Hence, this is graph VI.

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 4

Graph of (d)r=1+2cosθ :

Since, the graph r=1+2cosθ is a limacon and r=1 , then inner loop will be there. Hence, this is graph VI.

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 5

Graph of (e)r=2+sin3θ :

Since, the graph r=2+sin3θ is a limacon with 3 leaves. Hence, this is graph I.

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 6

Graph of (f)r=1+2sin3θ :

Since, the graph r=1+2sin3θ is a limacon with 2×3=6 leaves. Also 1<2 , then 3 inner leaves are there. Hence, this is graph IV.

Single Variable Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Enhanced Edition, Chapter H.1, Problem 48E , additional homework tip 7

Therefore, the correct matching is (a)V,(b)II,(c)VI,(d)III,(e)I,(f)IV
