Answer to Problem 53AYU

19.28 meters

Explanation of Solution

Given:

In the 2012 Olympics, Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the gold medal in the 100-meter race with a time of 9.69 seconds. In the 1896 olympics. Thomas Burke of the United States won the gold medal in the 100-meter race in 12.0 seconds. If they ran in the same race, repeating their respective times.

Calculation:

The speed of the second runner.

100 12  = 8.33 meter/sec

Find how far he would run 9.69 seconds.

9.69 * 8.33 = 80.72 meters

Therefore 100  80.72 = 19.28 meters behind the first runner when he cross the finish line.
