Concept introduction:

When treated with H2, Pd/C the alkenes react with two molar equivalents of hydrogen to give the parent alkane while alkenes will react with only one molar equivalent of hydrogen to yield the parent alkane. When treated with H2 in the presence of Lindlar catalyst the alkenes are not reduced while alkynes are converted in to the corresponding alkenes. The double bonds in the benzene ring are not reduced under normal conditions.
