Calculation:
Step 1:
Find the zeroes.
(x+3)2=0 [Set a(x)=0] x+3=0 [Take square root of each side] x=−3 [Subtract 3 from each side]
There is a zero at x=−3 .
Step 2:
Find the asymptotes.
x−5=0 [Set b(x)=0] x=5 [Add 5 to each side]
There is a vertical asymptote at x=5 .
The degree of numerator is greater than the degree of the denominator. Therefore, there is no horizontal asymptote.
The difference between the degree of the numerator and the degree of the denominator is 1 , so there is an oblique asymptote.
Divide the numerator by the denominator to determine the equation of the oblique asymptote.
x−5x+11x2+6x+9 [Expand the numerator: (x+3)2=x2+6x+9] (−)x2(+)−5x_ 11x+9 (−)11x(+)−55_ 64
The equation of the asymptote is the quotient excluding any remainder.
