Summary Introduction

To analyze:

In the given case, a football player was injured during a match. His leg was twisted and his knee joint swelled up. The injury was accompanied by a sharp pain and he was unable to walk during the latter half of the day. He was advised by his coach to visit a doctor who would drain the water from his knees. Determine the meaning of sentence “water in the knee” and reason for the condition of Jeremiah's knee after an injury.

Introduction:

The knee joint is more damage prone because of its mobility and complexity. An injury may cause swelling in the knee. This can occur either due to damaged blood vessels, synovial membrane, a fracture, or rupture of ligaments. Sometimes, an injury may cause an increase in the synovial fluid of the knee joint and this condition is known as “water in the knee” or knee effusion.

After viewing the MRI and talking with Elaine, Dr. Leutz strongly advised her to have reconstructive surgery on the ACL and to use conservative therapy on the partially torn medial collateral ligament. First, though, he wanted her to "pre-hab"-that is, take physical therapy for several weeks-in order to have the knee and leg in the best possible shape before the surgery. She was also instructed to use a more substantial brace. Dr. Leutz described the procedure: either a cadaver tendon OR the middle third of her patellar tendon would be removed and used to replace the ACL, which would be removed. Elaine opted to use her own tendon. Five weeks later, Elaine went in for surgery. She was given a drug used for conscious sedation as well as a general anesthetic. Through the arthroscope the surgeon noted significant injury to both the medial and lateral menisci, which he repaired with sutures and screws. The pieces of the torn ACL were removed. A superficial incision was made in the midline…
After falling off a horse, Mary complained of pain on the right side of her thorax that intensified when she took a deep breath or coughed. The emergency medical technician suspected a broken rib. Using palpation, how could the EMT identify the precise location of the injury?
JL, a 50-year-old woman, fell and broke the left tibia at the ankle. She is in the emergency department, waiting for the fracture to be immobilized. The leg hurts and she notes that the ankle is swelling. A diagnosis of a simple fracture and sprain (damage to ligaments) is made. What is the cause of pain and swelling?  --- don't need this --- I need question #2 answered What can JL expect in the days to come as inflammation resolves and healing begins?
